THAT is the true harbinger of Spring! How exciting. They are amazing little creatures.

Some cabins where we stay in Estes Park, CO used to have hummingbird feeders out (now removed because of bears), and while I know hummingbirds can be aggressive, these guys were out of their little pea-sized minds. Darting around even more than usual, constantly fighting, lots of really close near misses running into people, etc. It was crazy! I commented about it to the owners, who said they knew something was up and had switched from an "instant nectar" (nothing more than superfine sugar BTW) to making their own with table sugar, boiling water, etc. They thought maybe there was an additive of some kind in the instant nectar that was having an effect on the birds.

A little additional discussion revealed they were making the nectar half sugar and half water - yikes! The ratio is four parts water to one part sugar. The poor little hummingbirds were hopped up on one heck of a sugar high! They switched over to the correct ratio and over the next several days the birds calmed down to their normal level of activity, and we were wondering if maybe we should set up a tiny little HB rehab center for the transition : )

Enjoy your "flying jewels", Grace

omg! toooo funny. Hummers with a sugar high! lol!
Yep, I make the 1-4 mix, 1part sugar to 4 parts water, boil,,, and let cool before putting out into the feeders.
I do not add any colorants either.... the red top & bottoms on the feeders attracts the hummers quite nice... I have used yellow as well but did not attract as well, orange works,,, (I have even spray painted the glass part of the feeders w/a reddish orange paint to make the feeders more visible...

I've seen the ladybugs, but haven't seen any hummers yet!

I am debating hanging a hummingbird feeder this year. I know they visit my neighbor's yard.... I would LOVE to have some here. The ladybugs have definitely arrived. And unfortunately fire ants have arrived again as well. Bleck! But I guess with the good comes the bad ;) Our crab apple trees are really budding as is our red bud. The evergreens are dropping an unbelievable amount of pollen at the moment. Spring is definitely here... just praying it stays for awhile and summer holds off!

Haven't seen hummers here yet . . .it's too early and I hope it stays too early for a while. I love them, but we need our weather to not be too warm too early

I hope our spring lasts long enough that fruit trees don't bloom too early, however, I think it's too late already for some of them.

The subject peaked my curiosity! What would a farm gal have to say on the topic of Hummers! I'm thinking those large vehicles that are a combo of truck/SUV capable of surviving a battle field attack.

Well, I learned something tonight! You are not referring to those large four wheel beast but hummingbird! lol Maybe I need to get my head out of the city and back in farm country! lol Cheers!

I saw and heard the first hummingbird of the season yesterday. Such a beautiful sound!

We're expecting snow tonight, our hummers don't usually show up until mother's day. Grace, you're a hoot.

I know, the "Vhooot" sound they make as they fly uber close always makes me laugh, not to mention their little hummy chirps...
I only have 2-3 each day, but they come every morning and then again later in the day just before sunset... I love watching them from my kitchen window.
