Hi Girls –
You may remember my post from a couple of years ago about Rosie the Riveter, what her “can do” spirit means to me, and a little bit about the exhibit at Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh. Well, today I received an email from the History Center that they are looking for materials for their upcoming exhibit “We Can Do It! WWII,” which will run April 25th 2015 through January 4, 2016. http://www.heinzhistorycenter.org/exhibits/we-can-do-it-wwii?utm_content=photo&utm_source=WWII+Artifacts+eBlast&utm_campaign=WWII+Artifacts+eBlast+-+2%2F20%2F15&utm_medium=email
In particular, the History Center is seeking materials primarily relating to the impact of WWII on Pittsburgh, as well as Pittsburgh’s influence on the war effort.
I realize it’s a long shot, but I do know that some of you have ties to our area, or may have some of these items and be willing to loan them for the exhibition, so I thought it couldn’t hurt to ask for your help, if even only to help spread the word.
Right now they are looking for the following items for the exhibit:
• Gold star window flags • Jeep accessories - shovel, axe, water cans, gun racks, etc. • M1 helmets attributed to Pittsburghers • MSA helmet liner • Westinghouse helmet liner • Sherman medium tank • Information related to J. Howard Miller's "Rosie the Riveter" Westinghouse poster • Dog tags • Materials related to Tuskegee Airmen • Colt M1911 pistol or other small U.S. firearms made by Union Switch & Signal • U.S. Army Medic red cross armbands and medical field supplies • U.S. Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service) uniform • U.S. Air Force WASP (Women's Air Force Service pilots) pilot's flight suit • Original soldiers' letters outlining combat and overseas service • B-17 bomber pilot uniform and equipment • P-47 & P-51 Mustang pilot uniform or equipment • Artifacts connected with Western Pennsylvania men or women serving at Pearl Harbor • WWII issue Atabrine tablet packaging - anti-malarial drug for the Pacific theater • Wartime equipment, ammunition, and products made by Western Pennsylvania companies • Employee and personnel i.d. badges for factory or service work in Western Pennsylvania • Artifacts from Keystone Ordnance Works (Crawford County) - employee i.d. badges, TNT boxes, employment paperwork, etc. • Artifacts, photos, or archival material related to children's daycare centers/services provided by local factories • Civilian Conservation Corps uniform or camp work equipment • USO artifacts and materials connected with documented Canteens in Pittsburgh • Artifacts and photos documenting neighborhood "drive" activities - scrap iron drives, grease drives, hosiery and salvage drives, rag drives, etc. Could include samples saved from drive, wagon or wheelbarrow used in a drive, flyers and signs, great neighborhood photos, etc. • Artifacts and photos related to blackouts and air raid drills • Materials related to the "Double V" campaign • Children's patriotic and war-themed toys, c. 1942-1945, and Wolverine toys from WWII era • Artifacts related to War Bond Drives and "Victory Booths" - especially local school drives • Artifacts related to the Women's Land Army, 1942-45 or other USDA/agricultural war effort activities during World War II, including Victory Gardens • Plane spotter games - for identifying Axis planes / paper wheel, card game, etc. • Artifacts from "Victory Center" department store campaigns • Civil Defense, War Bond, and War Loan posters • Programs, posters, and flyers from the Army War Show at Forbes Field - July 1942 • Materials related to the development of atomic power by Westinghouse and Duquesne Light
If you or anyone you know are able to help locate any of these materials for use in their exhibit, they ask that you please contact their curators at elruby@heinzhistorycenter.org
Thank you so much for your consideration. I just think this is such an important exhibit. What they have I place now is wonderful, but they are really, as they put it, “putting their collecting efforts in high gear” for this upcoming exhibition. And as WE all know, together, “We Can Do It!" Yes, we can!
Finally, if you’re going to be in Western Pennsylvania in the upcoming year, please do add a visit Heinz History Center to your itinerary. Believe me, it’s WELL worth the trip!
Most sincerely,
Nini
