5/12/2015 Put on your comedic thinking cap. This’ll be fun.

I ran across a fabulous photo called “Rosie with a lollipop and polka-dot bandana.” Needless to say, if you’ve already peeked, the portrait begs for a caption, and you’re just the jester for the job.

So, give it a whirl—what IS Rosie thinking? http://bit.ly/1HeZrKo

5/16/2015 Small dairy farmers (me included) love to dote on their darlings. We pet ’em. We hug ’em. We may even adorn them in flowers to show our girls how much we appreciate their marvelous milk and (generally) gentle dispositions.

But, the same can’t always be said for larger dairy operations, where cows are often akin to assembly-line employees, and working conditions can be, let’s just say, less than cozy.

Therefore, the last thing anyone would expect to see in a large commercial dairy barn is cows lounging on waterbeds.

Whaaaat? I have a video on Raising Jane that will fill you in: http://bit.ly/1EO0Wsh

5/17/2015 (MBA Jane) For this week’s Make it Easy/In the Garden Beginner Level Merit Badge, I went shopping. Outside. In my yard. And maybe in my neighbor’s yard.

And by yard, I mean trash. Hey, now, before you get all judge-y on me, farmgirls, remember this little nugget of truth: A penny saved is a penny salvaged. Or is it: A bird in the bush is worth two in the garden?

5/18/2015 (Meg) Back in October, I mentioned the Kirkus Prize and its $50,000 award to each writer in a variety of genres. I also vowed to devour the chosen book in their fiction category. And devour it I did.

Lily King won the prize in the fiction category for a brilliant little novel by the name of Euphoria. It also won fistfuls of other prizes and accolades, and I am happy to report that it certainly lived up to its reputation … http://bit.ly/1QXCYU7

5/19/2015 The Google Oceans mapping tool is one more way in which Google packs up the imagination and sends it sailing around the globe. Now, with Oceans, you can just as easily plunge beneath the surface of wild waters worldwide—for free. Want to see more? Head to Raising Jane: http://bit.ly/1FxLfMv

5/21/2015 (Meg) Can you find something in your life to be happy about today? How about for 100 days in a row? It sounds like a pretty tall order, but 100HappyDays.com is challenging people to attain an attitude of gratitude by simply snapping a picture every day.

It started in 2013 as a personal mission for founder Dmitry Golubnichy to bring happiness back into his life … http://bit.ly/1Fqveot

5/23/2015 (MBA Jane) For this week’s Farm Kitchen/Bread Making Intermediate Level Merit Badge, I learned all sorts of fascinating things. In fact, you could retitle this post “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Yeast, But Were Afraid to Ask”! Not to be confused with the lesser known literary classic, “Everything I Learned About Yeast, I Learned in Kindergarten.” Or “Chicken Soup for the Yeast Lover’s Soul.”

I digress.

I have a charming little quote about yeast on Raising Jane: http://bit.ly/1emHEVB

5/25/2015 Memorial Day, now observed each year on the last Monday of May, honors men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Many cities honor fallen veterans with parades, which are often followed by family gatherings and picnics also marking the beginning of summer.

5/28/2015 The profusion of roadway ruts left in the wake of the Northeast’s harsh winter weather perturbed many a New Yorker this spring. But, instead of simply swearing and swerving around the holes, Schenectady resident Elaine Santore decided to take action and fill them herself.

This go-getter gal didn’t use asphalt. She packed at least 10 local potholes with potting soil and—(how farmgirl is this?)—flowers! Pansies, to be precise.

What was her motivation? I’ll share on Raising Jane: http://bit.ly/1HUpOTo

5/30/2015 (MBA Jane) For this week’s Make It Easy/Candlemaking Expert Level Merit Badge, I got to channel my inner pioneer girl. Actually, she’s not very inner: she rises to the top at frequent occasions.

5/31/2015 Mispronounced words?
Where? (aka, Who me?)
You might be surprised.
To-MAH-to, po-TAH-to.
Don’t you wanna know?
Seriously, though … There’s quite a queue of words that we’re likely to mispronounce on any given day.

I’ll give you the list on Raising Jane: http://bit.ly/1dEIixt

6/2/2015 Our fingers, dark with soil, press seeds and pluck fruits.
Our shoulders feel the heat of the sun.
Come tomorrow’s sunrise, our muscles will ache with work done diligently.
And we will begin again.

You see,
no matter where in the world you may be,
we’re not so different,
you and me.

So, to celebrate common ground across the globe, let’s have a little female farmer geography bee, MaryJane style (all fun, no foul). What do you say? It’s easy—just scroll through the photos on Raising Jane and try to guess each farmgal’s geographic location: http://bit.ly/1Ji3ypI
