Finally, after restoring the old floor loom from heddles to reed and a little in between and after months of research-on-line-videos-4-Weaving books and reviewing (many, many times) a very old original 1940 Union #36 weaving pamphlet.... I have completed warping (dressing) the loom.
Tomorrow, I will begin weaving rag rugs. I really didn't think I would be able to figure this out and it sure took me long enough to complete the process-but ladies I just can't help myself....I am all smiles right now-

This looks so great. Now I am coveting a loom of my own. I wish I had space for it. <sigh>

I know that warping is a tedious process - your loom is beautiful!!!!

Had to re-ty one thread that snapped in my zealousness to beat the living daylights out of it to get a nice tight weave. Once that was remedied----then I began again. As you can see the threads are laying nicely and tight but kinda wobbly in a 3-D kind of way.
I now have the beginnings of a hem which I will roll under. I have warped enough so that I can complete several rugs before I cut them free....I kind of feel like a little kid learning how to ride a bike! This is going to be so much FUN.

Melody,
Good for you! This looks so Awesome! I volunteered at our local Colonial Plantation and they have a very similar loom. Its so fragile and complex that NO one is allowed to touch it without training. It must have taken so much time and effort for you to learn how to do that! I'm so happy you got to make this dream come true!
Enjoy!

Finished the hem which I will "turn under" I'm not very big with fringes as they get too tangled up in the wash....Now the "body" of the rug has begun to appear. It really is starting to look like a real rag rug!
Joyce...does the fabric look familiar????

Here in Minneapolis there is a museum of Somali artifacts. They have gathered anything which these people managed to get out of their country when they fled. I can relate to this because my mom flec Lativia at the end of World War II. In that museum they have constructed several traditional Somali weaving looms and they teach classes. I have decided that this year, I will go there and sign up. I have woven on an 8 harness loom when I was in college and absolutely loved it.

Cut the rug from the loom yesterday and now I am in the process of "tying" off the fringe so that I can clip it short and roll a hem. Not bad for a first rug huh? I am noticing a phenomenon called "smiling" rug and have contacted a very nice lady through my Etsy site about using a "temple" and more than likely switching from my huge and tall shuttle to a ski shuttle for better clearance---apparently my shed is too narrow. All in all I am pretty pleased with the outcome and will proceed with my next rug as soon as I can address the issues I had with my very 1st one. Onward and upward as they say!

That is so durn impressive. Wow. The striping looks nice. I agree with you about the fringe. You should be very proud of this. I would be busting my buttons. Remember that saying? It's ancient! Marianne |
