Help, please. We are still battling fleas. I never had a problem with the evil things in Wisconsin; it was too cold. But now!?!! My babies are miserable, and it turns out two of the cats (and DH) are allergic to the bites.
Supposedly the "cold" will take care of them, only it hasn't yet. The organic measures I used in Wisconsin worked great, but they are just not enough here.
And I can't use essential oils on the cats.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I have read that giving the critters brewer's yeast will help. Has anyone tried this? Does it work?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here in Texas I deal with fleas all the time. Can't get rid of them completely because of all the stray cats that pass through my yard and the squirrels in the trees. Best I can do is control them.
During the hot months when fleas are at there worse I bath my little rat terrier, Maggie, in original blue Dawn dish soap. It kills them and doesn't irritate her skin. It helps to keep them off her too.

There is a product on the market called Cedarcide.

I used it once to get rid of bed bugs and it worked well. I'm not certain if you can use it because of the cedar oil but call the company. They are very responsive and may have other ideas for you.
Check the Herbal Wisdom forum for advice on using diacotomaceous (sp?) earth to get rid of fleas.

I use DE in my yard and you can sprinkle on your carpets as it will not harm your pets. I also use blue Dawn dish soap to bathe them and then put Advantage on to keep them at bay. I have also used Zodiac in the past on carpet and wood flooring as they can get into the cracks of the floors. We did this in November this year because that was the first time we noticed a problem. The Zodiac is good for 7 months but your pets need to be out of the room you spray it in until it dries.

I finally gave up and bought a special flea collar from my vet for one of my cats, the one who seems to be a flea magnet even when other cats have responded just fine to more natural methods. It's made by Bayer and lasts 8 months. She tolerates it just fine, though none of my cats has ever worn a collar before.
A good natural preventive (not a cure) is to use Brewers Yeast tablets as treats. Not all cats will go for them, but I've had cats who go nuts for them. |
