This winter I am planning on making my girls some dresses and summer clothes because I'm not comfortable letting them dress in ways that I myself would not dress like. Finding items at 2nd hand stores is nearly impossible unless you know someone working there or go in as soon as they put out new stuff. Besides, I would really like to slowly switch over to organic clothing and buying that is spendy.
Anyway here is my question: Where do I get simple, easy to follow patterns for a newbie, such as myself? (My skill level is making simple table quilts, no pattern skirts, patchwork blankets, pillowcases, pillows and hand bags. Clothing from patterns is totally new to me. I checked out Walmart and wasn't really impressed with what they have.
In some of the advertisements in MaryJanesFarm magazine for the fabric, I have noticed cute little girl romper/jumper dress that I liked. Any idea where to get that style? I have no idea what they are called. Usually worn alone, or with leggings underneath.
Also, any good books I could see if my library has or any tutorials online you could recommend? Thanks in advance!

speaking of Thrift shops,, have you checked in their Notions section (usually by bed linens/towels etc.)... I find patterns at most Thrifts, and for 25- 50 cents on average...
You might have to ask where they might be in the stores...
Also, keep in mind that buying a large cotton dress will make for fabulous fabric not to mention buttons & zippers...
I have found floral print dresses that were 'ugly' as a dress but have re-purposed into little kid tops as well as aprons., deco pillows totes etc.
Also, old bath towels make for great bath robes (for small children...
Also I have bought garments for a dollar or two soley for the fabulous buttons..
Once I found a rather large mustard colored table cloth, for $1.00, I bought it purely for the Bullion Fringe, I ended up with 3 yds of gold fringe for a $1.00.. and I cut up the table cloth fabric and made 3 cat pillows for my kitties.
And I agree, check out the Library for books,,, or go into 'search' on the inter net and typw in "free simple sewing patterns" and see what pops up.
Don't be intimidated by patterns, we all started somewhere...

Thanks, Grace! I am intimidated by patterns for sure, but you are right! Every one has to start somewhere :) I never, ever thought to look at thrift stores for patterns! Shannon, I don't have a printer but once I get one some day I will check out the online patterns! Totally bookmarking that page as well :) Thanks for your help!
