"Those things are worth their weight in gold!" said DH when were were bringing in the freshly dug potatoes in the old wire egg pails I had managed to scrounge from my parents' farm. They were just sitting in a corner of the garage, long unused and I just knew they would be useful. The rubber coating on the wires protect apples or other produce placed in them.

Over the years of gardening we've found, built, bought, repurposed or discovered a lot of things that have made the job easier or more pleasant. I will be sharing a few here.My bet is that you may have different discoveries to share! Join me here.

Lately it seems I tend to use my pockets or an empty feed bucket to bring in the eggs. I have been eyeing the wire baskets at the feed store but haven't bought one yet.

Love those baskets as well. We have one that is covered with yellow and another that is faded orange.

Susan...I have a funny story to tell on myself. I lived on a farm when I was young...but I am really a City Girl
who loves the whole Farmgirl Life Style. I was at one of my Favorite Antique Malls a couple of years ago and found
a really cool wire egg basket...that I thought would work great for bringing in my produce from my garden...so I
bought it and brought it home. My husband came in and saw it sitting on The Kitchen Counter...and he said to me...
"Why did you buy a golf ball bucket?" LOL I thought it was for eggs but it turned out I wasn't even a Good
Farmgirl Wanna-Be. When I checked out egg-baskets on-line I saw that they were very thin wired or like the one
you showed rubberized to keep the eggs from breaking. I guess...I am more of a City Girl than I want to be. LOL

Hugs and Smiles,
Peggy

The more gardening we did, the more we wanted a greenhouse, to stretch the season. We checked catalogs and were in shock about the cost. We wondered what it would take to build one, checked on materials and methods. Then ended up using what we had.
When we built our house there was no garage for a year or two so we had purchased an aluminum car-port kit, just pieces of tubing and joints with a cloth cover to keep the snow off our car. There was a reasonable source of green house plastic. We stretched it over the frame and DH cut 3 inch sections of plumbing tubing and cut them lengthwise. removing a strip to form clips. We had to tie the frame down to cement blocks to keep the wind from picking it up.

I thought I had sent this picture too.

By the way the egg basket picture was a stock photo, not mine.

Our fruit picker is similar to this one. It has two sections of wooden pole joined by a couple of wingnuts and a little collar thingie. It is great for picking apples from our large tree. It can be used with a single section of handle for lower branches, adding about 6 feet to our reach, or add the second handle section and reach almost double that. The local garden supply center can sell as many as he can get in stock. There are other versions, even a PVC homemade version.

We live near a marshy wildfowl protection area, so a downside is tremendous mosquito production at times. It can make working in garden uncomfortable. I hate using the chemical insect repellants so we checked a sporting goods store for non-chemical protection and got mosquito netting hoods to put over hats, an inexpensive and effective solution. One downside however is forgetting that you are wearing it and trying to stuff a fresh raspberry into your mouth!

Our 4 wheel, dumping garden cart has been a Godsend, used here for hauling pruned raspberry canes as we are cleaning up and preparing for spring. We use it harvesting squash and apples, hauling rabbit manure for fertilizing, and dozens of other ways throughout the year.

These windchimes are a delight as we work in the garden on a breezy day. I have heard they can repel deer, but only when the wind is blowing and they like foraging at sunset and dawn when the wind is often down.
