I know many of you love the fun of Halloween as much as I do so I decided that as FSOTY, I wanted to share my enthusiasm with a Giveaway! Just leave me a post about a fun Halloween memory and your name will go into the Punkin' for a drawing on Sunday October 19! I will contact the winner for their mailing address and get the fun in the mail. ![](icons/icon_smile_big.gif)

Of course it wants to post upside down!! But Halloween can be full of little tricks here and there!
One memory of Halloween that I had was our Girl Scout Troop always participated in program at the recreation center with a fun booth. It was free to the public and school friends and others loved to come all dressed up in costumes . Each troop or church group had a fun booth like toss the pumpkins or fishing for prizes. The program started after school and ended at 5pm so we could all get home to go out Trick or Treating in the neighborhood. It was such a fun way to kick off the holiday and enjoy the excitement of everyone there!!
Trick or Treat!!
Well, all the names went into a basket this morning and..........Heather, ndairy, won! Congratulations Heather and I hope you enjoy this little bit of Halloween fun. I promise no tricks!
Thanks to all of you for sharing the most delightful Halloween memories. It was fun to read them all and hear about your special moments as a child or with other children. I wish I could give everyone a surprise! Here is an idea I just came up with. If any of you would love to surprise each other with a little fun, how about you contact someone from this list and see if they want to do the same and then exchange a bit of Trick or Treat? You never know when a Farmgirl might be looking for a chance to send a bit of fun your way for this fun holiday. We might be "too old to go out Trick or Treating" BUT we are not too old to Trick or Treat via USPS!! Farmgirl mail is Awesome!

It'll be fun to share one of my favorite Halloween memories with you and all my Farm Gal Sisters.
When my son was four I asked him who he wanted to 'trick or treat' in our small town of 2200. Without giving it a second thought Dustin said "I want to 'trick or treat' Marshall and Mr. Younce". I couldn't keep from smiling - wanted to laugh out loud.
You see Marshall Robinson owned the Texaco station and Mr. Younce the grocery store. So Dustin put on his incredible hulk costume made from ripped up old clothes and we went 'trick & treating' at the Texaco station and Mr. Yonce's store. Both men filled Dustin's bag with treats and he was happy to go on home after seeing two of his favorite people.

My best memories of Halloween was of my kids-----we lived way out in the country with not to many houses around and our dirt road. So they put costumes on their ponies and with flashlights on their saddles down the road they went to knock on any doors they could find. Of course it wasn't real dark yet---They had a ball and went to three houses and laughed themselves silly. MB

I lived in a small town, and when it was Halloween the school would have all the grade school little kids come to the school in the evening all dressed up, then we would all march down main street as a parade, then it was back to the school for cider and fried cakes, and an award for the best costume. One of my favorite remembrances of Halloween was when I was a kid: One year my brother had come down with rheumatic fever and so couldn't go out with me to Trick or Treat...so, my mom asked one of the neighbors if I could go with them. They said sure!! Since mom had to stay home with my brother she hadn't gotten me a store bought Halloween Costume or Mask...so, trying to think of something she could throw together at the last minute...she decided to just dress me up as a boy. I wore my brothers baseball cap (putting my long hair up under- neath it) and his baseball jacket etc. I went around with my Neighbors and was so happy that I got to still go Trick or Treating despite my brother being sick. When the Neighbors brought me home my Mother said, "Well June, thank you so much for taking Peggy out with you!" June got a funny look on her face and she said, "You mean thanks for taking Billy out trick or treating?" My mom said, "No, that is Peggy dressed up in Billy's clothes." I guess my costume was so good the neighbors thought I was my brother the whole evening. LOL The Trick was on them...and I got lots of Great Treats! Which I shared with my brother. ![](icons/icon_smile.gif)

I believe the most memorable story that I have is when my old dog, Maggie, was just a pup that Halloween, October of 2000. It was an unusually warm Halloween evening that I was able to sit on the front steps of my house. I dressed Maggie up as an organ grinder monkey. Well, this little blond girl and her Father walked up to us. I asked the girl if she wanted to pet the monkey. The little girl started screaming and backing up. I couldn't tell her fast enough that it was just a black puppy. Needless to say, she and her Father left without accepting any candy.

I grew up in a very small town called Lyman, Wyoming. On Halloween, my Mom would bring us into town and park at the local restaurant. Mom and Dad would go in and drink coffee and turn us loose on the poor innocent town. Our goal was to reach every single house in town. We would come back 2 hours later with pillow cases dragging from the weight of so much candy. My, how things have changed!

I always looked forward to dressing up on Halloween. I remember always picking a costume that would be the most make up - usually a clown. But, I'm not going to pretend - my favorite part about Halloween was coming home and dumping my sack on the living room floor (along with my 2 sisters and brother) and seeing all that candy. Mom and Dad would make sure we rationed it out rather than eating it all at once :)

My favorite Halloween memory is from the last Halloween party that I celebrated with my mom and my niece before my niece died. We always threw a huge party for the neighborhood kids. At the end of the party, after it was good and dark, we'd take a walk through the cemetery by our house with a few people hidden to scare the kids. That particular year, I was hiding in between a couple of graves, laying down on the ground when my niece spotted me (trying not to laugh because everyone was walking right by me) and brought her younger brother over to "check out the shadow"...well when they got close, I jumped up and screamed "boo" and the kid screamed and fell like a sack of bricks, passed out cold for a minute. My mom came running over saying "Oh my god, he's dead". He came around quickly and thought it was funny afterwards, but that is by far my favorite Halloween memory and that was one of the biggest and best parties that we ever had.

I grew up in Illinois, and one of my favorite Halloween memories was when we had to wear our snowsuits over our costumes to go Trick or Treating, because we had a huge snowstorm the day before Halloween. When people answered the doors they had to ask what we were dressed up as, since most of the costumes were not readily visible. I also agree with Heather - dumping our bags on the floor and sorting and trading candies back and forth was always a highlight.

4 years ago I called mt daughter and said there was a surprise coming her way. She needed to keep close to her phone. I flew from Portland Or to Charleston SC and I needed her to pick me up! I celebrated the week with her, my granddaughter who was 5, and my grandson was 6 months old. Her hubby was out to sea since he was in the Coast Guard. Before I left we got to go Trick or Treating. We had a blast taking the kids around and for me it was the first time I ever got to walk around a neighborhood with out a coat! It was a great night out that night!! Warm and nice out!
It is always a wonderful day on the farm! |

One Halloween when my youngest was 4, (He's now 33) he wanted to make his own costume, a black trash bag with a head hole and arm holes, and black pants, but he wanted me to paint his face as a skull, which I did, he went to our local park and entered the costume contest, (I was worried for him, everyone else had really fancy made costumes, including his older sister and brothers), he carried a big stuffed spider he has had since his 1st holloween, and he WON, not only his age group, but all the way to the best over all costume, it made me cry then, and is making me cry now thinking about it...needless to say his siblings all wanted to make their own costumes next year, but the park did not have a contest again till my grandkids started going out...

Heather, you look adorable in the Halloween Pumpkin Hat and glasses!!! I am so happy that you enjoyed your Trick or Treat surprise. It was fun to put it all together for a surprise too.! Maybe you can use a bobby pin to dangle those spiders from your hat? Hehehe, a little spooky fun!
Thank-you all again for sharing your great Halloween memories! I think we all enjoyed reading them and recalling our own fun Halloween experiences. I have my fat orange pumpkin on the porch waiting to become my 2014 Pumpkin Moonshine next week. How about you? Do you carve a pumpkin for your porch on Halloween? Share here your traditions and any photos you might have!!

That's a wonderful idea Winnie - putting the spiders on the hat, or even on a shirt :)
Thanks Peggy - you're so sweet!
I haven't carved a pumpkin for quite a few years. Since hubby and I were dating (we've been married 12 years already!) I have some little ones I set out by some mums for decorations. Maybe I'll try to do something with them. That would be fun. I'll have to see if I can find any pictures of the ones we carved.

Oh Heather, you must carve a little pumpkin this year! There is nothing more fun than to see it's funny grin shining into the night on Halloween. Plus, you can take the seeds, wash and dry them off in a kitchen towel, lay them out on a baking sheet, sprinkle a bit of vegetable oil and toss them about till all lightly covered, and then sprinkle with sea salt or some other seasonings. Roast in the oven at 250 degrees till crispy which takes about 30-45 minutes. Be sure to give them a toss half way through to get seeds toasted on both sides. Delicious and crunchy! Since you live on a farm, you can just put the pumpkin somewhere in your living area to watch it grin back at you while you crunch on the seeds!! Hehehe, a little healthy Trick or Treat from your Pumpkin Moonshine!

Can you eat the seeds from all pumpkins then? I roasted some a couple years ago from some pie pumpkins I froze. I thought about getting the seeds from these too, but I wasn't sure since they're little. I also thought about saving the seeds to plant next year. Not sure I'll eat them in front of the pumpkin though. I think it's going to have to stay outside and keep the kitties and cows company :)

Heather, yes, you can eat the seeds from any pumpkin and you can dry them and plant again next year as well. You would be surprised at how big the seeds are even in a smaller pumpkin. When you go to carve it, you will see what I mean. They are bigger than say the butternut squash. Try it and then let us know what you think!
