It's a perfect fall day here - a great day for being outside. So far I have planted one sage & Tuscan rosemary in the ground. Yesterday I got three lantanas in the ground.
Later today or tomorrow oregano & thyme will go into the ground. Forecast is for a harsh winter so I am putting most of container plants that have not been moved inside into the ground. Only 3 or 4 plants will stay on the deck - those I will be able to cover & un-cover as weather dictates. Last year I had way too many plants to look after during the ice storm.
The deck is starting to look bare which is a good thing, because it needs to be painted & sealed. I will do that in the coming weeks.
Come spring I will buy more herbs for containers because I like having them on the deck - close by to kitchen for cooking.

Enjoy your day in the autumn sun Sara! Nothing beats a beautiful fall day for working in a garden. Sounds like you are doing a great job getting ready for winter. You'll appreciate all the hard work your doing today when the cold weather settles in.
We had gorgeous weather here in the Chicago area, but today is a wet and blustery 40. Next warm up and I'll start winterizing around here.

Dawn, It is that time of year, no matter where we live, to get our gardens ready for winter. I did plant the thyme and oregano so all the ground planting is done. Next will be bulbs. They will go into large containers - covered with leaves - and wintered over on south side of house. Early spring when they start to grow I will move them to the front yard for a show of color.

Wow! You make me feel like a slacker. I did get a bunch of daffodil bulbs from a gardening friend of mine that I need to plant. We hadn't had rain for a few weeks so I was waiting for the ground soften up. It should be softened up now after today's rain.
Like any gardener, we're looking forward to the spring blooms!

I did the same thing - waited for rain to make digging easier. I do everything the easy way if I can. I started getting ready for winter a couple of weeks ago by bringing everything inside that was coming in. Then yesterday & today I put plants in the ground.
My work schedule depends on what kind of day I am having so that's why I start early so by the time frost gets here I am ready no matter the bad days.
Nov 7 is the first day of frost.

We just planted over 300 Tulip bulbs and also Garlic. I don't think we will dig up the Tulip bulbs next year. Just let them naturalize if they will. Now we are picking apples---yum--pies, applesauce, eating and giving away. We may rent a press and make juice too. MB

Sounds perfect! I got a couple different gift cards on my birthday last week that I plan to buy some new plants with. Too hot the psst few days but soon.! Have fun!
Inside me there is a skinny girl crying to get out, but I can usually shut her up with cookies. |

Marybeth, your tulips sound wonderful. In the spring they must make quite a showing. Tulips are treated as annuals here. Other bulbs will come back year after year but not tulips.
Aunt Jenny have fun deciding which plants/bulbs to buy. Some of my best gardening days are spent in my rocker, with garden catalogs, dreaming about next year.
