We live in an area where there are bears, coyotes and mountain lions roaming about. They've been seen, they've killed animals and they've been hunted. I've seen a bear outside our front window and LOTS of scat all around the house, on the road and in the woods. My hubby has seen lion tracks in the wooded area behind our house and several of our neighbors have seen them, two different ones have lost goats to a lion and one, just across the road has lost sheep.
My hubby wanted to show me this lion track which, with some others, is in the path that goes from our house to the garden and/or his shop. They are right by where we park the riding lawnmower. This creature passed through since the rain just this past Sunday night!
Yesterday morning, I saw on the other side of the neighbor's orchard fence, a sheep that had been lion-killed. Mercy me!! CJ

This is the back of our house and where the lawnmower is parked, so you can see that it wasn't far from our house.

Yes, they are fascinating. I've always been intrigued by the "big cats". We lost our llama a little over a year ago, killed by a lion. His pen wasn't too far from the house either. Yup, watchful and aware! That is one reason by my hubby carries a pistol when he goes to do chores with his Longhorns, who amazingly enough, have not been bothered by lions. But then, they have really long, pointy horns . . . CJ

When we move, both my hubby and I will carry, and the kids will be taught how to shoot! The properties we have been looking at have rattle snakes, mountain lions, and bobcats. I don't mind them being there, as long as they stay away from my family. I am even willing to share some of the livestock when we get there, over my kids!!!! Basically, just leave this momma bear and her family alone ;)

I saw a Bobcat...right here in the city last summer...in my Neighbors yard. I was sitting on the Porch out back and I glanced up as something moved...and I thought Oh, my gosh that is the biggest darn cat I have ever seen. Then I noticed he had lean muscular shoulders and was way too tall for a house cat.
Did you guys see that 7 foot cougar...shot here in WA State last week? 200lbs of lean, sinewy muscle. That is one cat I would never have wanted to come eye-ball to eye-ball with.
Stay safe CJ...I would make lots of noise when I went out-side for anything.
Hugs and Smiles, Peggy

Oh my goodness, CJ! I'd be so concerned if I saw pawprints like that in my yard... I didn't see that cougar, either, Peggy... My goodness! And I screech whenever I see a mouse!!! God BLESS you!!! Hugs - Nini

Over the years I've had multiple bobcats and lynx on my property, a couple of lions and once a small black bear, hundreds of coyotes, kit fox, badger, more rattle snakes than I can count (they are ALL killed and cremated), and to date, have only lost one animal to them, one of my dogs cornered a bobcat in the barn, and lost her life protecting livestock, I was able to shoot that cat, and she was ancient and almost toothless and looking for an easy meal...other wise all other damages have been from stay dogs and ferral dog packs, which I practice the 3 S's (shoot, shovel and shut-up)...

I wouldn't be going outside at night. There are a few cougars in this area but I've never seen one. I know someone whose heifer died from injuries from a cougar. The only one I've seen was years ago at SIUE. We had a cougar mascot named Kyna. She was very tame and had been declawed/defanged. Someone in administration decided she was a liability and Kyna was sold to a roadside petting zoo. She wasn't treated well there. Wild animals belong in the wild. Cindy

Huge paw print. Sounds like you know what you are doing to keep safe. Bet you peek out the windows if you are up in the middle of the night. Fascinating creatures, majestic...scary. Stay safe. Mar |

Gosh, I hate that you're losing so many animals. What can you do to deter them? electric fence? Is it legal to trap them?
I only have experience in protecting my animals against coyotes. I wouldn't know what to do to.

Catherine, Actually, most of the animals are our neighbors. We have, so far, only lost our llama a little over a year ago. They are are way to wily for electric fences . . . most of the folks around here have electric fences which provide minimal security. I don't think it's legal to trap them. They are out there . . . and so are the bears. It's time for bears to be eating everything they can before hibernation. Watchful . . . carry a firearm! CJ

Scary!! We have a resident bear...and live in the most populated cougar territory in North America! I worry about my kids playing outside with cougars...I'm always checking the trees to see if they are up there prowling!
