Hi Farmgirls, We are sad to say that our sweet kitty, Badger, passed this past Friday. He was at least 21 years old. We had him with us for twenty years. We are all very sad, but dd is taking it very hard, as he was her best bud her whole life. I'm so proud of her, but it is hard to see her grieving so. I told her she is twelve now, that he waited way longer than he should to go (we thought he'd pass when dd was in third grade, but now she is in seventh), and that he knew she grew up with him, and that she's a big girl now, and that she is okay, and it was his time to go. But good grief, I am broken up too, as is dh. He was just the sweetest, smartest kitty. Many of you who read my blog as the Suburban Farmgirl will recognize him...he was always "photo bombing" me, lol.
He was a Maine Coon that someone threw out of a car in a box over twenty years ago. Someone else picked him up, and my vet and friend Rose gave him to me. Little did we know what an impact he'd have. I am also sad because he was the last of my original fur baby "pack", and was buddy to mychildhood cat that passed sometime ago. He had as big a personality as any dog, I tell ya.
We've had some "special company" here this week, family, which is just so nice. We've had a great week, except for the cat, but it was nice to have that connection here to comfort dd, too.
All our furbabies now our pretty young. Badger was so special...so much personality and was such a big part of our lives for so long.
Farmgirl Hugs, Nicole

I am so sorry for you and your family. The lost of a dear pet is not an easy thing to go through. Take comfort in that you gave Badger a good life for 20 years. He did live to a remarkable age.

Nicole...sorry for your loss and I am sure it is hard on your daughter. The longer we have our animal babies with us the harder the loss to the heart and home. ~ What an amazingly long life he had. That is something else...he must have loved you all very much and just didn't want to leave until he absolutely had to.
Hugs and Comfort, Peggy

Sorry for the loss of your furbaby :( Weather it is illness or old age, it is not easy to lose them and it is hard. I went through the loss of our kitty Sugar a little over a year ago.

You may very likely have seen this poem before, but your daughter may not have. If that is the case please share it with her.
Badger was one lucky cat to have come to you in the way he did and to have spent so many years in a loving home. Your daughter was so lucky to have had his company and love. Remind her, and yourself, of the good memories and how he helped you both to learn to love a bit better. When we have a pet, the reality is that most of them have much shorter lifespans than we do, but each one gives in their own way and enriches our lives. At 65 years old, I have quite a long list of dear animal friends that have gone "over the rainbow bridge" leaving our lives a little richer for having shared time with us.
Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers.
Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Nicole, I'm so sorry, I know how you feel, being a cat owner for 40 years we know how hard it is. We have one now a Calico, who is 21. Our vet said, her kidneys are working as well as they can for her age. You gave your Badger a Happy long life and that is what we try and remind ourselves of when we lose them, but it is hard. Pets are such a comfort to us! Big Hug!

So sorry for your loss. I'm in tears for all of you. I have been there and it isn't easy. The love far out weighs the sadness you feel now although it doesn't seem like it now. Many blessings friend.

My heart aches for your loss. I cried my eyes out the first time I read "Rainbow Bridge" but I needed to cry. Your explanation for Badger's passing was wonderful and I believe animals as well as people can wait (and often do) wait for the right time to cross over.
Prayers for you and your family.

Nicole...so sorry to hear you lost your sweet fur baby...I lost my Sweet Kitty a year ago this coming weekend...I still think of him everyday and miss him still...but the thing to focus on is you had your baby so many years and he brought so much enjoyment to you and your family...it amazes me what a long life he had...just shows how well taken care of he was by you and your family...

Oh thanks so much, girls. Susan, thank you so much for the posting of the Rainbow Bridge. I had a copy of it before, but it was tucked away in a scrapbook. DD had not seen it before, so I gave it to her. She loved it. We all still miss him, but he was sooooo old, I know. My dog keeps going over to his favorite spots and resting on them. We were so lucky to have him so long.
Friends sent us a card today that read, "Cats get into everything...most of all, they get into our hearts." So true!

Nicole, I'm sorry for your loss. What an amazing cat to be 20+ years old. I bet he had a lot of stories to tell.

Thanks again. We are okay. We miss him, we really do. Last night my hubby got misty eyed at a photo he saw of our little kitty. But we have our other furbabies who give us lots of love. I have a friend who lost her kitty last night at 14. She was saying how old he was, so at 21, I know I was really blessed to have my kitty that long!

Nicole, I am so sorry to hear of your loss of Badger. Just got back on line today after spending time with family. I know it's been a few weeks, but I'm sure you can still use condolence.

It's been strange not having him here. It really hit us all the other day when we fired up the wood burning stove for the first time this year. As soon as it was lit, he was under it. I really miss him, but he was very, very old.
Thank you all.

Nicole, So sorry for the loss of your sweet furbaby Badger. It hurts so much when we lose them. They are part of our family and they are so loyal as I see Badger was. It takes a long time to get over the loss. We lost one of our dogs a few years back and we have finally gotten to the point where we are remembering the funny things she did and the fun we had and it doesn't hurt quite so much. It will take time but it is something we who have pets are willing to go through because they loved us so unconditionally.
