I just read in the June issue of "This Old House" that rain barrels are illegal if you have/served by a municipal water system/company in Colorado, in other words rainwater is not "FREE" for you to collect in this state, and I wonder what other states have this rule/law also...

how can a state make rain water illegal? i will definitely be checking my state along with where we hope to move! thanks for the heads up!!!

I don't know much about the geology of colorado, but I think that law has something to do with not diverting water that, if not collected, would feed the underground aquifers, which are dangerously low. I could be wrong. Anyone from colorado familiar with this?

I believe Maryland has or was trying to pass some sort of tax on rain - if it falls anywhere on your property, they're going to tax you. I'll have to ask my Mom about that one again... I'm sure one of the other farmgirls must know... Crazy, crazy stuff. How can they do stuff like this? Unbelievable. Simply unbelievable. How can rain barrels do anything to cause them to be illegal? I mean, I'm sure if not monitored they could become stagnant water where mosquitoes could breed... but seriously... Hold your hats, girls... This is going to be quite a ride... Hugs - Nini

I contacted "This Old House" magizine to ask/verify this info, and was told they do not print any info like this without verifing the truth, they said most people do not even know of this law, but it is on the books, but, this does not apply to people who own their own wells...

You know, girls... There are an awful lot of laws on the books that we don't know about, or don't even honor or observe. Sometimes they're pretty shocking, too. It'd be a very different world if they enforced a lot of them, too. Maybe for the better, maybe for the worse, but very, very different. Hugs - Nini
