Where are they? I was talking to a friend recently and we both realized that neither one of us has seen a butterfly this year. And hardly any bees. No lightening bugs. Is it just here in the Midwest or is this happening in other places? Cindy

Our population is down as well. Sadly, I think it is partially due to the gmo products and pesticides that they are ingesting.... It is killing them all..... And yet somehow we expect to survive. I think very few people realize how beneficial these critters are! Okay.... Off my sap box now ;)

This is one reason I wanted to try my hand at raising Mason Bees. They are wonderful pollinators and not as difficult to raise as honey bees. I am hoping my first attempts are successful and that I can continue to grow them for my area. WE need bees! And we need to stop the pesticides that are killing the bees. I am so sad to hear that the Midwest is devoid of the usual summer critters this year. With big agriculture out there, it is not surprising because they are huge users of pesticides and gmo seeds. This points to me how we must continue to support financially the small farmer who is trying to grow sustainably. We must purchase their products and spread the word for others to do the same. Farming is a tricky enterprise and small farmers often lose their shirts with a bad season since they don't have the federal support of big ag businesses. MaryJane has been providing us with years of pertinent information on these topics in her magazines and books. She has done so much to bring into view many key issues and also offer alternatives and healthier options. We can all do more and this forum is a great place to keep the conversation going and sharing of how each of us can take small steps to better and healthier changes.
