Every time it is "chick time" and we go to the feed store, my son BEGS me for more chickens. Unfortunately, we live in suburbia, and already have some :). Also, I have already raised two sets of chicks in a dog kennel, one set in spring, one in the fall. It was a long process, and I have to protect them from my German Sheperd, all he smells is chicken legs! Plus, it took almost 10 weeks to integrate teh last chicks into the flock, it was harrowing. Pecking order is so violent :(. So, this spring I just kept saying NO!

:)

My friend who lives on a ranch says: Why don't you just let the chickens hatch them?

Low and behold, I got a broody hen. Went and got 3 fertilized eggs, put them under her butt, and the next day 2 hatched! We did not know how far along they were.

Rebel is a FANTASTIC mama! The chicks are 7 days old now, and it is such fun. And, leaving it all to Mother Nature is so much easier!

Attached, a pic of Rebel and her babies a few days ago.

Thank you, Michele. I am truly enjoying watching the chicks imitating their Mama. :)

It is so much easier when you can get a broody to do it. Nice looking mama and chicks. Congrats to you both.

How exciting Heike! I bet that your son is even more excited than he would have been purchasing some :) They are so cute! One of these days we are going to have chickens.

He was! It is pretty amazing to see them hatch and acclimate so quickly!
They are doing well and thriving. Already fly and have little tail feathers :).
