We recently purchased a small house and a tiny bit of land out in Megargel, Texas. The sunshine is abundant out there and we didn't feel comfortable turning on gas for an oven. We live in town during the week and I felt weird about leaving gas turned on while we're not at the house.
So, we bought a Sun Oven and used it this past weekend when we were out there. It heated up to 350 degrees and stayed there steadily throughout the day with very minor adjustments. My husband tried to make a solar oven but we didn't have much success with our homemade one. The one we purchased worked great and we will use it every weekend.
Here's a pic of the solar oven cooking our breakfast--pigs in a blanket (one of the few things I can get my picky daughter to eat).
Awesome, Sarah! Congratulations! Isn't it just so much fun?! I think it's great that yours got up to 350 degrees... Mine hasn't gotten up over 300... Sarah, glad to hear you have joined the solar movement. I have had one for a few years and still trying to get it down pat. I have had mine up to around 450 degrees but have a hard time holding it there. Nice thing is most things bake below that temp any way, just take longer. Enjoy.

Oh am I glad to see this thread topic on solar ovens. I have one but have been intimidated for some stupid reason. I plan on checking out the website mentioned above for some recipes. Anyone tried using it during the winter months? Curious to how it does then.
I use my sometimes in the winter. Last Thanksgiving I made the mac & cheese in it. It worked great, and had a slight crust and everything. It got to about 300-325. It was about 25 degrees out.
