Though we have two acres now, it is mostly woods and when we bought it 12 years ago, we needed a home, we wanted in the country, but now it isn't at all what we long for. I am quite unhappy here, though we are trying to make do. We have amended a decent garden area, but it still gets more shade than I'd like. I long for horses again, and I would ADORE my own dairy cow!! And fruit trees!!
Our family has been looking for 2 years for a place for us to really pour our heart into. It started out as land only. We wanted to be AWAY from the masses. More of a prepper type property; live water, some open, some woods, etc...
Now, we have considered some places with homes, some still only land. Still REALLY want live water, mostly open (ie...USEABLE) ground, at least 20 acres. But we need a good deal. We also need the state to be homeschool and firearm/liberty friendly with good growing seasons and not likely to have constant droughts. We long for back breaking work on our own place, not for a paycheck, to be sustainable. We are not afriad to fix up a place. We want to be out, but not too far, because we know to have a sustainable farm we need customers/ community. To belong to a community (we don't see eye to eye with our neighbors). We have scoured the internet in Southern MO, KY, even ID. What am I missing!? Why can't I find it... that wonderful forever home?
So today I find myself dreaming, wasting time on images of Farms precious to mine eye. Dream along??? :)

Beautiful homesteads for sure! Maybe north Idaho would be a good location? Good luck and let us know if you find what you have been dreaming about!

Teri That is near where Ms Wilma lives. She is such a dear woman, and her hubby Sterl is a sweetie! They live in Knob Lick. She is an expert on antiques, primitives, and textiles. I think she has an antique store near Cave City, but I could be wrong. If you get the chance, check her out! MJ used to feature several of her handmade items on her website (not sure if they are still there or not), and she is featured in one of her books too.

Lisa, I have talked with Wilma about a year ago,it may have been longer. i think at the time she was doing a fall show and wanted vendors, and she had asked me, but at the time I was just not able to do a show. Will have to find out where her shop is tho. My hubby is opening up his shop in Cave City, just outside of Glasgow and we want to be closer to his shop. Will sell this farm and look for something smaller. Right now we are about an hour away. Thanks, for the reminder on Wilma!

We are in Russell County, about 5 mins. from any of the alligator docks and 10 from the Marina (lake Cumberland). We are so close to the lake that our property is considered lake oriented. We LOVE this area, it is just not where the shop is :( Hubby, is an auto technician has been for about 29 years. I will be leaving my job next spring, so no need for him to travel and hr.

Oh good luck! We were fortunate to find a parcel of land we liked in driving distance of Louisville since we both work there. The big selling point for us was we have our own spring house with a fresh spring running out of it. The house itself was not a beauty, but it was a foreclosure and we loved the land so we're putting up with the house for now. Once we've paid the mortgage off we're going to build a new house, hopefully a log cabin. I keep pictures of log cabins as my computer desktop at work to remind myself what I'm working for. It's very motivating on days when I want to go out to lunch, I just look at the photo and remind myself whats really important and then eat whatever I've packed instead to save money.

I am dreaming too and looking every day online and every weekend in person. Everything is so expensive or needs too much repair. Someday.........

Elizabeth - LOVE your idea of keeping a picture handy to remind you of why you make the sacrifices. I think I need to tape one to my computer! Seems like I am more likely to order something online since it is so "quick, easy, and convenient." Time to really buckle down and watch every cent! Unfortunately it means I will probably have to stop signing up for as many swaps as well. THe worst part about that is I LOVE creating things for others!!! And when I "have" to spend time crafting, I'll actually make the time, lol. Crafting is such a relaxer for me!!!!!

Shannon - maybe just make a "crafting" budget and try and keep it under a certain amount. My husband and I are really good at sticking to our budget and we don't do a lot of expensive fun things, but we love eating out, and it is the biggest sources of discretionary money for us. So anything I can do to curb the restaurant budget is a must for me! So continually reminding myself why I should eat brown bag lunch has been very helpful.

Ok ladies.... talk to me about Idaho. It has come up dozens of times this past year. The furthest West we have ever been is CO. I admit the first thing I think of is brutal winters. How do you garden? What areas do you suggest?

Here is my suggestion Alicia - make a list of your must-haves, law-wise. Then a list of your "really want". For example, for our musts, we looked at home school laws, Brad's degree (where he can practice), and gun laws. Any of the states that did not meet our musts, we took them off the list. Then we looked at our "really want" list, which included things like raw milk and VBACs. From the states that were left, we looked at those items, and some of the neighboring states, because if you cannot buy raw milk in one state, but can the next state, you can live close to the border. I would see if that helps you narrow down your list at all. If snow is needed, keep that in mind... or if the opposite is true and you do not want snow. For us, we want snow and no humidity :) Another consideration is extended family and how far you/they are willing to travel. Just some thoughts.

We have done that mmostly. With tbe help of Joel Skhousens book.for the most part we have narrowed it down to Kentucky and Missouri because they aren't too far away still yet. Idaho st idli on our minds because of a proximity to Canada and all of the public lands that can be used. The concern with Idaho is the winter. We might not have even been as concerned as we were if not for this past winter and how it was here in southern indiana. I suppose one learns to adapt. Grow gardens in hoop houses and greenhouses. it fits the bill in those aspects. But it is a long way away. And we've never been there. And that can be a little scary.

I guess I just wonder how one does it. From the people who actually live in Idaho. We would actually prefer to be more in the middle of Idaho then we would in the southern section. So does anyone live in that area? Do you garden? Will you share with me what works and what doesn't work what you like what you don't like?
