I have some bee news and bear news....
The bee news is that a swarm of bees has moved into one of my vacant hives! I am really excited about this because I lost both of my hives over the winter. I was planning to clean out the boxes and seal them up till next year this weekend since I had not found time to order package bees this spring. Yesterday my employee was mowing our field and noticed the bees in this hive. Woo hoo!

The bear news is we had visitors of the furry black variety in our yard last night! We have recovered a few of the feeders in our neighbor's yard but they done runned off with the rest. We live in a housing development but are just across the road from a greenbelt that connects with a protected watershed so they have lots of habitat nearby. This is my first experience with bears. Anyone have any suggestions for keeping them away? I assume I probably shouldn't put feed out again for awhile to prevent them coming back for seconds?

Well Marilyn good news about the Bees. Glad they found a good home. About the bears---I feel sad that their habitat is going away and yet I don't want anything to happen to any humans either. MB

Bears do not like noises and will generally stay away from a place where there is some noise. Maybe you could hang some clanky but not unpleasant wind chimes in some trees.

Around here, they say not to put food out in the bird feeders. That will attract a hungry bear. Okay in the winter when they are hibernating, but when they wake up, they are looking for any kind of food they can find. I would suggest not putting bird feed out for awhile.

That is amazing on bees moving in. How nice. Put your bird feeders out during the day and take them in at night. A pain, but it will keep them from being busted up. Do you have electric around your hive? I would sure put some wires up if you don't. A hive is expensive to have a bear bust it up. Good luck

Thanks for the suggestions. We have reduced the number of feeders and have been bringing them all inside at night. It is a bit of a pain to do but I will get used to it. I would love to hang up some wind chimes but my other half hates them so I will first have to get him to agree.
The bees are on a different property where bears are not a concern..... but raccoons and skunks are. I keep a strap on the boxes to keep them out. There isn't one in this photo but I put one back on as soon we determined it was occupied.

Awesome news on your bees. I want bees. Next year, I got chickens this year and was busy with them when it was time to order. Next year for sure. Love how your hive is painted!
