Hi Farmgirls!
Next to a vintage pickup truck, I've always wanted a treadle antique machine. I've found one for sale locally. Going to take a look. It's an off-brand, not a Singer, and I think from the 20's. I haven't seen the machine yet, but the cabinet is beautiful. How do I know if it's a good deal? Any advice is appreciated. I have an electric machine so it's not like I can't sew and am in need of a machine. It'd be awesome if it works but I think it'd be an awesome showpiece and can use the table in my sewing room. Advice??

Well, it is actually much older than we thought. It is from 1895! It's beautiful. Cleaned up the wood with Scandinavian Clean and Feed Oil, and lightly brushed the dust off the machine with a damp cloth. It's in good shape, only needs a belt to get it working. I love it! I also got it for a song!
Don't you love when you find something cool like that? I think it will look good mixed with the modern pieces in the room.
I didn't need it, but it was a special splurge just for me. :)

Heck! Use it anyway for sewing stuff that you will be giving to a farmgirl. It will then be extra special.

Nicole, enjoy it... maybe even make an apron on it..
We have several vtg. sewing machines in cabinets.. I actually use them as end tables and one that we have is 46" wide,,, and I use it as a desk in the family room...
If you ever come across an old sewing machine cabinet with an old in op sewing machine,,, use the sewing machine as a 'decorator piece' or convert into a lamp.. and then use the cabinet as a Bar... lol!

What a beauty! How fun that you found a bit of the machine's historical journey tucked in the drawer. The table is gorgeous too - love the carved decorations.

Thanks! I just posted an answer under one of the comments. Several people have asked me what I used to clean it up. It's Scandinavian Clean and Feed, and works wonders on old, dry wood, or wood that has water marks or layers of old wax. They have a US distributor and you can get it from them here: scancare.net
They also make a biodegradable, non-toxic all purpose polish for everyday cleaning call Scand-Oil. We used to sell their products when we owned a furniture store.
Caught my daughter's kitty checking out the sewing machine yesterday. She better not even THINK of using it as a scratching post...

I just found out today that the sewing center I use will work on and restore treadle machines. You may find one in your area that will do the same. Also, awhile back MJ had an article with information about someone who could talk you through repairs. You might try finding that. As for the case, we have used the drawers as storage on shelves and the iron bottom with a piece of glass as a table. Hope you will enjoy your find.

Juanita, Keep looking. It took me awhile to find the ONE. You never know. I really did get a good deal. Saw a couple at the flea market last weekend, not as pretty as mine for way more. It looks to me the only thing we need to do is get the belt attached. Will keep everyone posted, but I think I will look into getting it going, if only for the novelty. (But I'd love to sew on it)!

Thanks, girls! A friend of mine found a place in our area that specializes in fixing treadle and antique machines, though I do not think it will take much to get it going. Will keep you posted!

Texdane - The machine is a beauty. I'm a rug braider. I use my great-gram's 1908 machine for sewing together strips, and it works like a charm. It's such a familiar piece in our dining room. I love that it uses only people power, and think it's beautiful. Only thing is, why oh why did they make these machines black???
