I'm not sure what to do. There is a situation at work where, due to another person's negligence, I'm being deprived of savings on my insurance that I've already earned through participation in a new program. The other person didn't get my application turned in on time, even though I had called her and she told me (back in january) that it was sitting on her desk. I called a couple weeks ago--it was due by april 1st--and it was still sitting on her desk. So now they tell me I'm not eligible for the savings cause I failed to turn it in on time. It's a potential savings of over one hundred dollars for this year. I know it's not a huge amount but it's the PRINCIPLE of the thing that gets me. Why should I have to pay for someone else's mistake? What's more, she won't admit that she made a mistake. Is her word somehow better than mine? Apparently it is cause she's more "important" than I am. This just serves to cause me not to have faith in the Catholic church, cause it's a Catholic hospital I work for. I've already been treated badly by so-called Catholics, and I've tried to maintain my faith but what good does it do? They like to talk about God's love and mercy--what about His justice? I'm seeing a lawyer involving something else and I wonder if I should tell him about how I'm being cheated---like I said, it's not about the money but the principle. It's almost like principles don't matter anymore--people "talk the talk" but they don't walk it. I see this everywhere I look--in politics, employment, in churches, in organizations I belong to--someone says they "mis-spoke" when they lied and no one blinks an eye. It's getting to where you can't trust anyone. Sorry if I sound negative but this really upsets me. Thanks for letting me sound off. God knows the truth and He'll deal with this person who's not telling the truth.

Nini--I have considered contacting someone higher up in the diocese--I'll write a letter to the bishop if i have to. Our hospital has plans to merge this year with a group of other Catholic hospitals--it's the only way a small independent hospital can stay in business. there is strength in numbers. The person who let my application sit on her desk for three months is saying (try not to laugh) that she "found" my application just as I called her and that it "just" arrived in the mail that day AND...she JUST happened to open it as she was speaking to me. Can you believe it? And she's getting away with it and that burns me. I've EARNED that savings and being denied it is the same as stealing. I have an appt. to see my lawyer next week. This is the second big "mistake" that the hospital has made regarding me this year. Just makes me wonder how many other "mistakes" they've made with other people. And I try to be a good worker. I usually get done early cause I don't waste time. I take pride in keeping people satisfied. I was actually crying today cause I was thinking to myself "What must Jesus feel when He looks at some of the things that people in the Church have done?"
Anyway, it's the weekend and I don't have to be back at work till Monday. My garden is doing pretty good so far and it's supposed to rain tonight. That brings me a feeling of contentment knowing that the small patch of Earth I'm tending is producing for me.So I must be doing something right.

So you have a record of your communications with this person, and their responses? I hope they were written, but at least a record of phone calls made and received would help. The person's superior, then the hospital administrator would be the first people to go to. If your argument has to do with someone else not working in an orderly way, it would behoove you to follow the rules yourself. Arm yourself with the facts. You can also write "memo to file" documents while something like this plays out. These can be helpful if you have no other proof. Of course, if you haven't been doing that, it won't help you document the past, but you could start now.

Only you can decide if stirring the pot in this way is worth possibly having the $100 savings reinstated.

Here's a positive idea. You could go to your supervisor, explain the situation in a gentle way, saying that you feel sorry for So-and-So (the person who neglected to file your paperwork in a timely fashion despite your many requests)m, because she must be really in over her head. But you're willing to drop any complaints that could cause her even more trouble if you could negotiate an increase in your salary that would make up for the lost savings. Be very perky and helpful about this. It might work.

Good luck!

Rosemary--I talked to my supervisor and she herself said that it must have been sitting on someone's desk all that time. the problem is, the supervisor of the woman who let it sit is...well, I call her Ms. Catbert. (Those of you who read "Dilbert" will get it). No one at that level could have POSSIBLY made a mistake, you see. Even though it's dated January 28, they still say that I was late in turning it in. As for asking for a raise--I'd be laughed out of the office. Anymore, hospitals are run like corporations, and corporations don't care about people. By the way, this is off the subject, but there is a March Against Monsanto coming up on May 24. I think it's nation-wide. There will be one here in St. Louis cause that's Monsanto's headquarters. And I'll be there. (Thank God I don't work for Monsanto. Even some of the people who work there hate it).

Wow. Sounds grim. I'm really sorry. I'd advise you from now on to keep a record of dealings like this so you'll have a record. When you hand over important paperwork related to your benefits, stand there until you get a receipt. Stuff like that. You have to advocate for yourself since it appears no one else will.

If I were you, I'd be looking for another job, but only you can say if this incident is serious enough for such a drastic move.
