I'm planning on doing something a little different this year. I'm going to plant my seeds in bags of topsoil (which I'll add a little compost to). I think this will cut down on weeds and watering. Has anyone tried this? I've read about it in Mother Earth News. I'll use my bed in the front yard for an herb garden. What about beans? Can I plant them in the bags and add a trellis or should I plant them directly in the ground?

I grew potatoes in a bag a few years ago. I did get a couple meals out of it, but not enough to make it worth doing again. I never tried beans though. Hopefully someone else here has and can help you out.
