Ok, so my new chicks are now big teenagers. They are in their new coop in the garage until it warms and thaws a bit and we can put them outside in their nice new coop. I have grown very attached to them.

Yesterday, we had a fisher cat cross right in front of the yard! Two feet from my window! It didn't care that my big dog was barking and carrying on at the window, just walked on by.

Okay...so how do we set up a good protection for the chickens? Wanting advice as we have to fight off fisher cats, red tailed hawks, snakes, coyotes, racoons, and foxes that meander through our property. What works as a deterrent to the coop and doesn't?

Farmgirl hugs,
Nicole

Make sure the wire for their run extends underground and use netting to prevent hawks from spotting them. Don't know what to do about fisher cats--not sure how strong they are. Use a lock on the coop at night that raccoons can't get open.

We have shade cloth over the the outside pen. When we turn out the chickens to free range we only do it when we are home. They are locked in at night although something big might tear that apart. Good luck. MB
