Hi girls -
Hubby hit that age last summer, and has since received numerous pleas from AARP to join. He has just been tossing them to the wayside, but I would like to know what AARP really is, means, does... Over the years, we've known many people of a certain age who have signed up, but I have no idea what it really does for them. What do you think?

I have it and got my Auto insurance through it and have the lowest rate and great coverage. I had my State Farm guy here in town do a comparison. I always use it at Hotels and Motels. You really don't have to show a card but with my auto ins I have to be a member. The other side of the AARP it is used as a means to watch over the benefits in the government rolls. If a law comes up that is not to the benefit of seniors they use money from membership to lobby the branch that is trying the monkey business.

We've been members for 3 years. I'm 45 but I get a spousal card and I have to say that when I remember to use it, its worth it.

I joined and also got much cheaper car insurance and home rental insurance through them. I also get my income taxes done for free as an AARP member. Plus you get some restaurant, store, hotel discounts, etc. I figure it is worth the small yearly fee.

My parents have had it for years, I think mostly my dad just reads the stuff that has to do with insurance and taxes. I started getting mail from them last year--they must have a lot of financial backing cause they send out tons of mail. So therefore, I won't join. Besides, I'm too young to be that old!

I started getting information from them when I was about 45! I finally joined a few years ago. The annual membership is a lot less than many magazine subscriptions, especially if you buy several years at once, and they do offer a lot of discounts on many products including restaurants and travel. If I didn't have access to lower rates through another channel, the saving on one hotel stay per year would probably offset the cost of membership. You can check out the discounts on their web site without having to be a member. The magazine often has interesting articles, and it is nice to know that they lobby for senior interests on issues of the day.
All that being said, I think they must receive a lot of their income from advertising because I sure get a lot of mailings from insurance companies through them.

Thank you so much for the insights, girls. I think it might be worth it for the magazine and informative articles alone. I'll check their website, for sure! Cindy - I think his main issue is that it's hard to see all those AARP mailings arrive in the mailbox... But in his case, I think that's mostly because he's in serious denial about his age! LOL!
