Once upon a time, we had a large avocado pit that we put in a glass of water to see if it would do anything. A year or so later, the thing is very tall and we put it in a pot with dirt. My problem now is that the pit STINKS to high heaven! Hubby made sure the pit was completely covered by the soil and that seems to be doing the trick for now.

Has anyone tried growing the plant from a pit and/or did you have the problem with it smelling bad?

We started an avocado plant in water, but put it in dirt when is was a few inches tall, I don't remember any odor. I think if I tried it again I would check if I could prune it to get it to branch. It got to be 2 or 3 feet tall, with just a crown of leaves.

I grew them from the pit numerous times in CA. Here, I've done it once. I don't remember any odor either. Perhaps the soil soured?

No smell here either and ours had reached too tall to be in the house any more.

Carole, that's what ours looks like! We had to stake ours as well.

The dirt isn't what stinks, I don't think, as it was brand new in the bag, but maybe it IS the dirt. Not sure. I don't want to stick my nose there to smell it as it's so bad! Like rotten something or dead something!

We have a plant about 4 feet tall. The pit doesn't smell on ours. The only thing I can think of is if water wasn't changed out while it was rooting in the glass?

We did change out the water. I'm going to go smell the thing (if I don't return promptly, it means I passed out) and compare the smell of the dirt to the smell of the plant.

I have actually done this several times... and they have successful matured to produce. (I used a pollinator established tree and then started my seedling from a pit (half in water till it produced roots and leaves)... you will need a pollinator or need to graft the tree to get fruit.
I currently have one I started from seed ( 1 1/2yr ago) it has been repotted twice..(I never noticed an odor).. and I will have to repot it again this Spring... my problem is I live at the 2000 ft elevation so I may have to plant it at my families home in SO. Calif... as I now live in the mountains in Central Calif. Bummer!

I think it was the dirt that stunk. The smell is going away (or we're getting used to it). So we will have to pollinate it or graft it Not sure how to do that.

I have never EVER been successful at doing the water and the cup thing. I think that was put out by the Avocado Board so that we could never grow the things! Ugh!!!

Last year, I cut off a milk jug halfway, filled it half full of soil, and then threw in 4 pits after a mad night of guacamole. They ALL sprouted (they will send out a root first, which you can clearly see when using a milk jug) and then the shoot will come out of the top. No smell. I have another one that just sprouted a couple of weeks ago. It does take time. Be patient. You will see the root snaking out of the pit first, then the shoot several days later.

Now the problem will be what am I going to do with 5 avocado trees? I also did a mango the same way, and it is leafing out.

LOL Grace!!!

Our avocado plant/tree is doing well in the pot with soil right now. The kids always ask when it's going to grow fruit, and I tell them if it did that now, the whole thing would topple over!

It has grown a foot since we put it in the pot!!!!! What do you do when it gets too tall? It's going to hit the ceiling soon.

Well I'm pretty ignorant about it but I wanted to know if you are using the pits from avocados that come from the grocery store are are these pits that come from a catalog?

Tracy, we're using the ones from avocados from the store. I don't expect it to do much of anything but it sure is growing tall!

I think the ones we're using are the California avocados - the big huge ones.

We tried two other pits that didn't do anything at all. I think we just had a lucky pit! Ha!

it really is pretty much 'hit-n-miss'... but when they do grow,,, they grow pretty fast.
You might want to start another one (or 2).. then when you transplant them.. they can cross pollinate... but I believe one has to be a pollinator variety.. I think... it's been awhile since I grew thwm back in SO.Cal...
The one I have now is a Haas if I recall...

I have 2 more coming up right now. As I said, they are both in soil. It takes a LONG time for them to germinate! That makes a total of 6 that I have started. I have no clue what I'm going to do with them. lol!

You should see this thing now! It was about to hit the ceiling and then flopped over (we have the stem tied to a stick) and now the it's acting like a snake or ivy and is starting to climb.
