Hello Fellow Farmgirls:

Thought that I would share a wonderful, inexpensive skin care product that I've used for years. Safflower oil is high in linoleic acid, which is an essential fatty acid. A bottle of it from the grocery or health food store costs only about $4-$6 dollars, but it's an excellent moisturizer, especially when you use it right out of the bath or shower. Try to find the cold pressed variety, which may be in the health food aisle at your local grocery. I buy little blue glass bottles with vial droppers from Whole Foods and I fill them up with the oil, and add a few drops of lavender essential oil. You can omit the scent (the oil is odorless) or choose something different like rose or sandalwood. If all of the oil doesn't fit in your container put the remainder in the fridge as it will turn rancid within a few months. The oil absorbs quickly and doesn't leave a greasy feel.

I have not tried Safflower oil yet on my skin. In fact I never thought about it, let alone adding an essential oil. Brilliant and thanks for sharing! I know what I'm going to be doing this weekend!!!

Here's a link to some more information. http://health.howstuffworks.com/skin-care/beauty/skin-treatments/quick-tips-how-does-safflower-oil-benefit-skin-.htm

Also, cleansing your face with oils is a big trend right now. It seems counter-intuitive, especially if you have oily skin, but I've been doing it for months now and my skin has never looked better. I've also been using a facial oil from Target (Boots Brand Organic Facial Oil) as a moisturizer as well and my skin seems much more balanced. A small bottle is $8.99 and it lasts for several months.

Mary, what kind of oil do you use to 'cleanse' your face? I have heard good things about this method and am curious to try it :)

Calicogirl,

I use castor oil and sometimes safflower oil. Here's an interesting blog post that gives some other suggestions. http://wellnessmama.com/7569/oil-cleansing-for-naturally-perfect-skin/

I usually just buy the oils at the health food store, but I've noticed that several of the drugstore cosmetic brands have gotten on the oil bandwagon. Garnier has a new cleansing oil out and Loreal now has an oil moisturizer. I've also been using the Boots Organics Facial Oil that I found at Target for $8.99 as a winter moisturizer and it's fantastic. Sometimes I even cleanse with it.

I have used Lavender oil in Olive oil. It seems to work the same as the Safflower oil. Think I will try it with the Safflower oil next time. Thanks for the information.
