Hi girls -
Well, someone has now hacked and fraudulently used ANOTHER one of our cards. My card was used at a local mall store tonight around 5:00 pm. We were at home getting ready to go to a funeral - this charge is NOT mine. I have not used my card at this store for anything - EVER! I am so upset. This is the third debit Mastercard we have had that has been hacked over this holiday season, and that has needed to be canceled and replaced - and this one was NOT part of the Target hacking fiasco!
I couldn't understand how a purchase could be made in a store by just using my card number. The lady I spoke with said that numbers are being electronically stolen when you use them everywhere, then who knows what they do with them. They are even just plugging numbers in until they get a hit. They must be taking numbers and creating fake cards to use at point-of-sale for purchases. Whatever they're doing, I really hope they catch these people. Unreal. The scary thing is that we don't use credit cards, so if I hadn't caught this in time, these people could've really hit our checking account big time and wreaked havoc with our finances. Shame on them. Shame, shame, shame! I'm so tired of this. We so rarely use them at all, but this is just one more reason to stop using these cards altogether.
I have been advised that right now credit card companies are seeing an inordinate number of credit card number hackings. They are advising customers to be vigilant to watch their accounts for unauthorized purchases. The company will cancel the card number, then when the purchase goes through, they will immediately credit back the fraudulent charges. In the meantime, since the card is canceled, anyone trying to use it will be arrested.
So, just want to let you all know what's going on so you will be extra careful and watch your credit and debit card accounts vigilantly, just to be safe. We were very lucky to catch this as early as we did. The lady said that a lot of people really don't catch it until it's too late and a lot of damage has been done. They fix it, but in the meantime, it could really mess up people's finances. BE CAREFUL!
Well, anyway... Glad they can "fix" the problem, but dang - it's SO frustrating!
Have a great weekend -

Oh Nini, I'm so sorry! I can't believe someone would have the gall to do this at any time, let alone during the holidays. Unbelievable. I'm so glad you are being vigilant about this. You must be beyond fed up. I'm keeping you in my thoughts!

I've worked in accounting for many years and have personally handled payments to and from others' card accounts. The thing that astonishes me the most is how many people do not check their accounts. I worked for a company which provided internet service. When I got an account which wasn't being automatically paid with the card, it was usually the case that the card expired or the number changed. I had some people who told me that they had stopped using our service and they didn't know they were still paying. ??? They hadn't looked at their bank statement. I could only credit them back 3 months so many people were angry. We always tell them that they have to cancel in writing either hard copy or email.
As far as this fraud goes, the rate of arrest is very low. The companies and law enforcement do not have the staff to chase down the petty offenders. They will go after the people who are perpetrating large scale fraud but they do not always get to the source and it all just happens again.
I would suggest that you might want to change banks and switch to a VISA card. I know this is a pain but someone is getting information from a large stash. Talk to your bank about it and if you do not like their answer, take your business elsewhere. I purposefully bank at a small regional bank. They have fewer and less expensive fees and do not engage in shifty business practices.

I NEVER use a debit card anywhere anymore. Ours were hacked and we found it to be safer and easier to deal with a credit card. Debit cards it comes out of your account right away and if there is a problem you have to deal with waiting for the bank and the charges to go back in. Takes too long for my liking.

Also, when it happened to us I couldn't figure out how they could go into a store without a card but I was told they take the number and make a card and just sign the name and no one checks for ID. I always make sure where ever I use it asks for my ID. I tell them they should not accept it if they aren't going to check the ID. That is what it is there for. Very frustrating.

Just got our card numbers stolen for the third time. The charges are always made in a different state and each time the credit card company called us the day it happened...Twice with Chase VISA and once with AmEx. It was always pretty easy to fix, but you do have to wait for your card and check your statement carefully. Marianne |

Isn't that just the most frustrating thing, Marianne? UGH! So sorry for all of you who are going through this, too. After the last couple of times, I really thought I was on the ball with this. Guess you can never be too, too careful.
You know, Denise, that's a pretty good idea... I remember a time when they DID check ID... I wonder why it stopped?
I remember back in the beginning of December, our son and I went to Panera for a quick bite. Part of our order was paid by a gift card, but I forgot to take cash with me, so I pulled out that card. The clerk didn't give it back to me. I literally had to ask her for it. She just kind of got a weird smile on her face, stared at me vacantly, then held up the gift card and slowly fanned out my debit card from behind it, then SLOWLY handed it back to me. Even my son said it was the weirdest thing he'd ever seen. I couldn't shake it for days. Initially I wanted to call the manager the next day, just to let him know about the weird experience, but then I decided I was just overreacting, so I let it go. I can't help but wonder, though, if that little incident was more than we thought, especially since my number was used at a store at a local mall. I just can't help but wonder if she is responsible for this somehow. I am sure I will never know. We were back there last week, but we didn't see her. I am wondering if someone else complained. I guess we'll have to wait to see what happens. Hopefully the approval will just expire before the charge is finalized and nothing more comes of it. Well, nothing but the culprit(s) getting caught, that is.
Hugs -

In Europe, a person never has the card taken from them to be processed. They bring a scanner to the table, you scan it and approve the charge. Soon the US will start doing that too, I hope.

Not to mention that Europe no longer uses the cards with the magnetic strips on the back. They're easy to hack.

I just still really don't get how a person could hack my numbers and make a point-of-sale purchase without presenting a card... Can anyone shed any light on that? It's just really bothering me. When I called the card company, they said there was no need to call the store, but I really wanted to. I'm sure there was not much more they could do about it, but I really thought they should be made aware. SO frustrating.
Thanks girls -

My in-laws are European, too, and on all of their cards is their photo id so no one else can use their card.
Nini, I am so sorry to hear of this trouble for you!
Big hugs, girlfriend!

I'm okay, sister... Just grumbling and incredulous at the audacity of the world, that's all. Everything will work itself out in time. Just VERY glad I was on top of things before anything really painful happened! ;)

I've never had a card hacked (thank God) but today i got a letter from my Congressman and they are going to investigate the thing with the unknown person trying to hijack my mail. I've heard it may take two-three months for the feds to solve this case. I guess they're very busy. Identity theft is a serious problem. I only have one card and I check it every couple of days. I feel for you, Nini--life just seems to get more and more complicated. Cindy

Thanks, Cindy. I'm okay, really. Just really want people to be careful. This is like the second or third time for us in the past two or three years. Aggravating. I'm so glad you check your card regularly - that really has been our saving grace. Once burned, always watching for a flame.
A neighbor corrected me yesterday - point of sale is not a purchase at the register. This person would've had to purchase at the register in order to use my card in the store. She said whomever did this had to know the clerk. They'll get them.
I do understand that people are desperate today, but why must they hurt others to get what they want? Geesh!

Girls, I just wanted to let you know that Target has announced that they will provide a free credit report and free credit monitoring for 1 year to Target customers. Go to www.target.com for more info. There is a link towards the top that says important notice. Hopefully none of you were affected by this mess and Nini, I hope this is finally all behind you!
