I've been gifted a large bolt of exceedingly stinky burlap which I would love to cut into strips, gather on twine and tie country check bows to as a garland to trim my living room and kitchen with. That was my plan, but the smell is really strong! Will washing it by hand help? Or do I just need to wear a bandana over my nose?

Annika, sounds like a cute idea. Too bad about the smell. Have you tried airing it out in the sun and fresh air? Might work if not too strong. What could the smell be? I bought a brand new carpet once from a catalog and it smelled damp like it was in a musty basement. I thought I would never get rid of the smell. It eventually went away but I kept taking it outside to air out. Now there is no smell. Mabe a few Fabreeze treatments will help. Good luck!

Apparently resins (?) in the fibre just smell like that. I'll be holding my breath and continuing my project it seems Hopefully it'll be worth it. I'm The worst crafter in the world, so I'm having my doubts.
