Hi everyone,

I'm been thinking for months about the best way to bring in consistent income with my products. I see that some of you regularly go to farmers markets. There aren't many here and i think i'd have to do a bit of traveling to attend any.

I thought If i could do an event or two a week that would be perfect. Does anyone have any suggestions or other ideas/events?

thanks
Connie

This time of year you should start seeing information about craft/holiday fairs. They may be a more economical way for you to sell your stuff even if it isn't necessarily more consistent. If you do a couple though is seems like you may find out about more stuff like that. I know by doing the farmer's market I've found out about a lot more events that I didn't know were possible. Good luck.

Katrina,

we seem to only have 2 farmers markets within 20 minutes of me. one of which i dont know is even running, been trying for months to get in touch with the person running it. the other one doesnt respond. all others are an hr or more away. been contemplating doing that, though i'd rather stay local.

:( That is no good. I wonder how much interest there is in your town. I don't know about starting a market but that might be something to look into as well. I don't know how big you are or if there is any interest in a market but I've noticed even a lot of very small (1800 people) towns seem to be starting their own markets when they are far away from other markets like that. That is too bad the market manager doesn't respond for the one. 20 minutes isn't too bad unless you are dealing with traffic the whole way. I'm about 20 minutes from mine and it hasn't been too bad. An hour would be pushing it to me. We have a couple of vendors that do that though. It might be worth trying it for a season and see what the income is like.

Katrina i live in what they call 'wine country'. i live on the north fork of long island, 20 minutes from the end of it. then there is the 'south fork' of long island (which is considered 'rich') UGH, anyways, we have a lot of tourists in limos and tour buses for the wineries (which use to be mainly potato farms). we have several local farmers still out here which is nice, so local food is available. there seem to be more farmers markets the more west you go up the island, which is strange because even though there are other farms on the island, it's more populated and busy there, than where i live now. when the tourists go home, it's quiet here and not much traffic. i'm contemplating traveling an hr away (even though i hate driving)....but i have to figure out what to do. i wonder if there are ever any indoor events?

I have done the farmer's market, did ok there, some of the farmer market, want a percentage of your daily sales & a flat booth fee. Some days your lucky if you make you both fee back.

This time of year with the holidays coming, I love the bazaars & festivals! :D
I like craigslist for events, newspapers too.
They listings for vendors needed.
Also School have PTA & Craft fairs this time of year, most are indoor.

I pulled up Long Island on Craig's list, there are some listing for vendors needed.

Hmmmm... If you have tourists that is a good thing. They make great customers, usually. Would there be a way to legally set up your own little farm stand where they could stop? I'm originally from a tourist area too. It is nice the business they bring but it is also nice when they go away and let the town go back to "normal."

Around this time of year there should be indoor events coming up. Here we get quite a few holiday craft fairs going this time of year. Churches, American Legions, and our Civic Center all hold events between now and Christmas. It is very seasonal but it might be worth checking out. I'm trying to figure out if it will be worth doing that on top of my markets. We luckily have a winter market too that is held in the green house of a local nursery. I don't know if I'll have time and/or the vendor fees to do both the market and craft fairs. I certainly haven't been making lots of money at market. All I'm doing is paying for my hobby at the moment. Hopefully that will turn soon, but I'm just trying to have fun in the meantime.
