The girls show our dogs at the Fair and it seems that every year we get fleas from going to the fair grounds (they hold the practices there as well)
I have used flea shampoo. Just wondering if there are any natural things you use that work.
I found one, using Dawn Dish Soap and salt.
Any other recommendations?
thanks

dawn dish soap is great for killing the adult, larve and eggs, and orange oil will help repel them, along with ticks and biting fly...s

We learned that eucalyptus (dried or fresh) around the house
is a natural repellant. (our vet suggested this) We purchased
some and put it in vases around the house. It looked good, and
seemed to help keep them away. I know this won't immediately
help your pets, but it's good preventative measures.
I absolutely despise fleas! We have wood floors and they love to
get in the cracks and breed. ugh...

Rachel~ How do you use the garlic? I have heard it is good for a flea repellent but don't know how or how much to use.

I use garlic powder and put a spoonful in with other herbs that I mix with enough molasses to make a ball and give it to them like a treat. You can also mix it in with their food--I've done that before too.

Would you be willing to share your recipe for it? We just used the Advantage but I hate to put chemicals on them if there is something else that works and isn't bad for them. Can we give it to them if they have this other stuff on them?

Sure, Denise..I mix together rosemary, thyme, black mustard seeds, wormwood (can sub southerwood if you like), and garlic powder then add just enough black strap molasses to make it stick together, roll into little balls and stick them in the fridge. How much you use would depend on the size of the critters you're giving it to. I mix up a few spoonfuls at the time and use it on the dogs and equine. I make bigger balls for the equine than the dogs of course. I'm real bad for not measuring but my guess would be that I use about 2 tablespoons wormwood, 2 tablespoons garlic, 1/2 teaspoon black mustard seeds and 1-2 teaspoons of the rosemary and thyme. So far it has been working very well with worms (why I started using it) and I have noticed that my dogs don't have fleas or ticks-- and they are outside dogs.

Rachel,
Thank you so much for sharing that with me. Would love to make some up and try it. I have to get the wormwood or southerwood and the black mustard seeds. Would be great to know I am giving them something that is not chemical laden.

One more question Rachel, how often do you give them these "treats" ;)

I usually give it to them the week of the full moon--when parasites are moving around most. I generally give them the last ones on the day following the full moon, for a total of 7 days.

Just remember that fleas live in your home or wherever your pets live kennel etc) so if your pet has fleas you need to treat the home /kennel as well.

We always treat the house when we treat the dogs Lorena. The only sure fire way to get rid of them totally is to get rid of the dogs. How ever, that is not an option here.

I just found myself a new herbal recipe to try - good on humans or animals for "insects" so I don't know if it works until I make it.
