Hi, Farm Girls,

I'm new to all this and I want to do some patchy, probably raised, square foot type gardening in the fall. A lot of my property has septic field line (could we say "gross") running through it and around it. It's all underground with no leakage on the top. I would never want to plant anything directly on top of the field line, but how far away could I put a raised bed?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Blessings,

Terrie

PS... This is my first post as a Farmgirl Sister! Whoo hooo.

I would suggest contacting the company who intalled your septic system or pumps out your septic tank. Other resources would be your county building officials or state health department. There are a number of different ways that septic systems are installed around the country and the rules for filling over or planting near their components are different from state to state. So it's best to find out what the proper spacing of planting beds is away from your specific type of drain field. Hope this helps!

Cheers! ~ Marilyn

Thanks, Marilyn.
This system is just the old time tank and leach field kind, and the most recent tank (we have 4 total on the property) was probably installed in the 1980's. Maybe I can ask my local Agricultural Extension Office. Maybe they would know. I used to work for the part of the county building officials office that issues septic permits, but they didn't know anything about gardening. I think a well had to be 100 feet away, or maybe it was 150. But they wouldn't know about gardens I don't think. But those were good ideas. Thanks for responding.

Thanks,

Terrie

Something I've often wondered--what is the difference between using poop in your garden (as compost) and planting near a septic...it's still poop! Anyway..if you didn't want to grow your garden near the septic, I'd go about 50+ feet away but you could always plant some pretty wildflowers over the septic and drain field to pretty it up some. Checking with the extension office is always a good idea. I did come across this http://richmondregister.com/lifestylescommunity/x530800906/Can-I-garden-near-a-septic-system --your post got me to wondering even more!!!
