well, for goodness sake .. we were talkin' about 'organization' on the forum a few days ago .. and i ambled over to my clothes closet .. now mind you .. hank and i each have a clothes closet about the size of a small refrigerator in these olde cabins! and i've been paring down big time since moving to 'the country' .. but i just went rip-roaring through all my jeans and skirts and shirts (haven't owned a DRESS since moving here!) TOSSED SUMMER .. FALL .. WINTER .. SPRING .. EVERYTHING INTO THE GOOD WILL BAG! and i SWEAR .. i only kept TWO skirts .. a jean one and a black one. i have a 'few' t-shirts and a 'few' white blouses (i LOVE white blouses!) ... gave away all but two pairs of shoes (kept ALL my boots though!) EVERYTHING else (oh .. including ALL my sweaters!) went to the Good Will today! Today is Wednesday .. come Friday .. i'll probably start panic-ing!!! I did do a little shopping today .. but didn't find anything i liked .. will wait ti'l i get to OHIO with lots more stores to choose from .. i DID buy TWO MORE pairs of BOOTS today though! I have some great JACKETS that i just couldn't part with too! Gave away ALL my scarves, belts and gloves! (well .. i did put aside my favorite Abercombie & Fitch leather belt!) Kept one winter coat .. but that is going too soon's i find one i like better!

NOW .. I CALL THAT 'ORGANIZATION'!!!! .. and i get to go shopping!!!

Good on you, Frannie! I have been debating being brave enough to do the exact same thing - I always seem to only wear my favourites anyway, but I have been having the 'just in case' mentality. You know, I better not get rid of that, just in case I may wear it again. I should just do it, maybe you have inspired me enough!
Best wishes,
Jayne

Miz Jayne .. you are sooooooo right .. i have surely had a major case of the "just in cases" forever! actually, i did a big PURGE before moving here .. so it wasn't as hard as it would have been. NOW .. i am going to only buy clothes that i LOVE and that are reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeel gooooooooooooooooooooooood quality! the kind that i will want to wear over and over and over again.

i've always said i have favorite 'uniforms' .. that i tend to choose from the closet .. so .. WHY have all the other 'clutter clothes'!

i've never been THIS drastic before though! lordy! hope i find some stores i like in toledo!

Very brave move Frannie, we do tend to wear only about a third of what we own. I think I read that someplace. There is usually one or two things we may regret getting rid of, but thats a good reason to buy something new, or used from the thrift store.

I just told my husband I was going to do the same thing. I must have 30 T shirts that I never wear.I have favorites and I stick to them.

I love this, Frannie! I've done a major purge this year because I had a major weight loss and n-o-t-h-i-n-g fit me anymore. I've had two interim sizes, and now I'm down to what I think is my forever size. So I've been shopping too -- MUCH fun to shop!! And, yes, good quality and love are necessary ingredients in what we will buy!!

Miz Frannie, you are beyond brave and bordering on insanity!!! I would SO have to have the new clothes lined up before I throw that much away! I would be afraid that I'd dig in store after store, never able to find exactly what I want, searching and searching, and getting more panicky by the minute. I'm very fussy about my clothes, and tend to have uniforms too; but I don't think I'd give away parts of my uniform without adequate replacements. I'm a nut for comfort, and change clothes several times a day depending on what I need to do.

Katie-ell, congrats on your weight loss! That's wonderful! Enjoy your shopping!

You gave away all of your sweaters? Isn't it cold up there? I would be making a bee-line to Eddie Bauer for sweaters for sure. I just pulled down all of my winter clothes from the attic the other day, and everything looks old and tired. (Like me!) Maybe a "Frannie Purge" is just what I need!! Good luck with your search for new things.

miz nancy .. i took a l-o-n-g hard look at everything that went into the goodwill boxes .. with that very thing in mind (ha! that's how so many of my funky JACKETS got hung back up in my closet!

Robin .. i tried on every t-shirt and 'pranced about' in front of the mirror .. deciding which ones i could live without and which ones i love. If i hadn't worn it in a year .. in the give-away box it went.

Mary Ann .. 'beyond brave and bordering insanity' .. ha! darlin' .. THAT is the TIP of the ICEBERG!! I've done the 'new clothes lined up' thing all my life .. and didn't find myself DESPERATE enough to get rid of the old! Strange rational there .. isn't it!

and oh yes .. i probably will do a little panic-ing .. and don't know how much shopping time i'll actually get in ohio what with watching two 'grandes' .. but i will have my weekends! I've never shopped 'on-line' before .. but might have to hit the L.L. Bean catalogue for a few 'necessaries' until i can find my 'gypsy clothing' shoppes that i like so much. AND THEN AGAIN .. i'm thinking maybe it's time for a 'character change' .. (as long as it isn't terribly 'normal' looking!!) HA! it IS halloween season and those 'costumes' are going on sale!

OH .. which by the way gurlz .. reminds me .. IF you do a 'costume' trunk, box, closet' for your kids .. oh lordy! OLD NAVY has THE MOST ADORABLE COSTUMES ON SALE FOR HALF-PRICE NOW .. IT WAS ALL I COULD DO TO KEEP FROM BUYING ONE OF EACH FOR THE KIDS!!!

katie .. weight gain or loss is a GOOD TIME to buy new clothes (so we feel good at any wweight) .. not lots .. unless we KNOW we will most likely be at that 'gain or loss' for a year. this year, i actually gained about 15 pounds since taking insulin shots in my stomach! HA! i'm blaming the insulin .. that's my story and i'm sticking to it! I went from a size 4 to a size 6 (and CRAP ..sometimes a size 8!) I could still fit in all my clothes (as i tend to wear 'floaty-flowy' clothes .. too damn olde to wear skin-tight any more .. without looking like a 'hooker-granny'!) yep! i'm trying to lose that extra 15 .. but fear when we go on our Africa vacation .. i will eat like an elephant! when we went to Alaska .. i think i gained 10 pounds from the DESSERTS on that cruise-ship .. and in Greece .. yep! too much 'goat and mousakka' will put weight on you too! i managed to lose all that .. soooo .. i'm hoping this 15 will come off before i add another 15 in Africa! i swear, all my life it has been almost impossible for me to GAIN weight .. until i started taking INSULIN for my diabetes!

but gurlfrenz .. at this age .. i am wise enough to know that we are ALL BEAUTIFUL .. and except for 'health issues' of being too thin or too heavy (and extra weight
CAN kick you into diabetes my dear friends!!) we are perfect just as we are. We each know what size/weight makes us feel best for ourselves .. and we should not strive to please anyone but ourselves in size!

Karin ... oh my yesss .. cold .. and sweaters are necessary .. or flannel shirts! and i "think" there is an Eddie Bauer store in the Toledo or Detroit area. if not .. i'll call for the catalogue. There is one of those huge BASS PRO shops about a half hour outside toledo .. i'll probably make a 'hit' over there! GOODNESS .. sounds like my wardrobe is walking down the path toward "FARMGIRL"!!!

The only think i'm a teeeeeeeensy bit panic-ed about is SUMMER CLOTHES .. now WHERE am i going to find SUMMER clothes at this time of the year .. for Africa? HA! maybe if i hit that goodwill, i might be able to 'buy back' some of my shorts before they put them away for the summer! Hank says his L.L. Bean catalogue has those neat-o (o.k.! hank didn't actually use the word: "neat-o") long pants where the legs zip off to make shorts .. might get me a coupla' pair of those .. and let THOSE be my 'Africa Safari' uniform!

I just did the same a few days ago. The zoo runs a "Use Less Stuff" sale each year and what doesn't get re bought by one of us goes to a charity in town. There's just something theraputic about purging and getting rid of the clutter.

That, and since my mother started volunteerng at the Habitat For Humanity store, not much has a chance to sit around any more.

Hubby was especially bad about hanging onto stuff that he probably hadn't worn or thought about in YEARS!!! I have tried to pass along the mantra that if it has sat for more than a year and you didn't even give it a thought (didn't even miss it) or get it out of a box, it probably needs to go. Now mind you, we each draw the line at family keepsakes and heirlooms, but clothing neither of us has a prayer of ever fitting into again definitely gets donated.

Here's a funny. Each year too the zoo does a halloween haunted trail kind of thing. Volunteers dress up and scare riders on a tram, and dressed up dummies wearing rubber masks help create ambience. I had to do a double take the other day when we drove by in the work truck, and I saw an old dressed up hag wearing one of my summer short short dresses!! This was an import from California from 9 years back, so I KNOW the exact same dress couldn't have belonged to anyone local. The old lady can have it, as I'll probably never be in a size 4 again!!!

Frannie-you have me laughing once again. I can tell you from my own closet clearing a few years back that you probably won't miss much at all. I donated about 6 trash bags full or things-just like you-from all seasons in one fell swoop-ok-maybe it took 3 as I kept some things and then found they could go a few months later (Yep-I was hording clothes). I haven't missed a thing. My friends who know how I love clothes thought I had lost it!
It is a good feeling to pass things on we really don't need or want anymore-isn't it! Now, I try to sort and purge each season and only keep what I love and what is comfy which I found is really not very much. If I need something, I can generally find it easily enough-sometimes in the way of a friend giving it to me. Plus, I find it is so much easier to get dressed without all the clutter. I can see everything I own for that season. I do store off season stuff in 2 under the bed storage bins.
I loved reading all the other comments too. It is that time of year again to sort and purge.
Katie-ell congrates on your weight loss!

Ellen in MI

And-last spring I decided I was looking too frumpy in my sweaters so I gave them away to a wonderful friend who looks great in them. I like my sweatshirts and flannels and long sleeve t's layed under them for these colder days.

Frannie,
I too have recently purged... now I didn't pack off everything kept that 1960's suede mini skirt LOL

Now I do know where you can get shorts this time of year.
I do mannequins for a department store in Florida and we carry year round shorts=Columbia, Izod, Liz, Levi, Dockers, Gloria! We are family owned, doing the Florida lifestyle year round...with a shop online website=free shipping and huge sales.

Hey-Ellen on MI-heee! :) Is that Main Island-it is a bit early. It is great to see your posts too-another Ellen.

Yeah-that suede mini is a keeper. I was a bit too young back then for them, but oh-that was so cool to see the older girls in the go-go boots and mini skirts. Do you still wear it? I don't wear skirts (only own 1 long denim) or finding one would be tempting.

Have a great day everyone!

ANNA ... what a scream about recognizing your olde dress! in this small town, if i were to buy clothes at our local thrift store .. i KNOW .. i would constantly be running into the 'previous-owners' thereof. but that would be a HOOT! i swear, in the past .. i have found some of my most favorite clothes in thrift shops!

MICHIGAN ELLEN .. well, this is the third day in a row i've put on my one and only blue jean skirt! guess mayhaps i should give it a 'warshin' this evening! think i'll wear my BLACK one tomorrow! i reeeeeeeeely must go shopping soon!

FLORIDA ELLEN ... i'd say send that mini my way .. but i did almost fall on the floor laughing as i pulled from the recesses of my closet .. a skirt so short .. that i swear my hiney-cheeks (which fall a little lower each year) .. would be hanging below the hem-line if i were to put it on!) i was thinking last night that i probably won't even try to buy any clothes from L.L. Bean (even though i dooooooooo LOVE their clothes!) cuz' ... i just have to try clothes on and feel the fabric before buying clothes. I woke up in the middle of the night with a 'brain-storm' as to how to get some summer clothes for our Africa trip. THRIFT STORES .. t-shirts are sold year round .. i have enough white blouses still .. and they go with EVERYTHING! it's SHORTS that i gotta' figure out .. and i decided if i can't find any .. i'll just find lightweight jeans .. and CUT those legs to the length i like. I'll buy a bunch of them ... and before heading home .. i'll find a laundromat (or have them washed somewhere!) and just leave them in africa! we are taking a suitcase full of 'school supplies' .. and i am told that good clean used or new clothes are also appreciated. that way, when we travel to Amsterdam .. my suitcase will be much lighter! (will leave that extra school supplies suitcase over there too) NOW .. IF ONLY THEY STILL MADE 'PAPER PANTIES'!!! Anyone remember those? They were short-lived .. but GREAT for travel. you just wore them once and then threw them in the trash!
