Hi! My name is Heather and I live in the Champlain Valley of Vermont. I'm a transplant, though, having grown up in the "Big City" (Seattle). Vermont has thoroughly "countrified" me, however, and I love it!

I'm a wife, mother of two (12 & 9), keeper of an animal menagerie (dog, cat, guinea pigs, hermit crabs, and chickens), psychiatric RN, Master Gardener, and Real Food zealot.

I raise and breed a very rare breed of chicken: the Silver Gray Dorking. I also decided we needed chickens that would lay a rainbow variety of eggs so I hatched out loads of chicks this spring of a huge variety of breeds. Time to build another hoop coop!

I also make my own chicken feed because my family avoids soy and I've had so many requests from chickeny friends to buy some from me that I'm working on marketing it.

I've only recently discovered Mary Jane's Farm magazine, blog, and forum and when I saw that there was a Farmgirl Sisterhood, well, what else could I do but join? LOL My daughter is 12 so I'm going to make sure to involve her in earning merit badges. We can't wait to get going on that!

Welcome Heather, It is good to get to know you. That was a long move, how do you like it in Vermont? I always wanted to see Vermont in the fall. I bet it will be beautiful.
So your family doesn't like soy, I try not to do it either but they are putting it in everything now. Do they put it in your chicken feed too when you don't make your own?
Well welcome again new farm sister, enjoy it here it is a wonderful place to be with many wonderful sisters to get to know.
hugs

Welcome Heather!

I'm an ex-Vermonter. I was born and grew up in Springfield, and then lived in Chester for 10 years before moving to Pennsylvania in 1985. I still get back to visit family several times a year.

Darlene - you're right - there is nothing like Vermont foliage in the Fall - hope you get there some day to see it!

Hugs,
Luanne

Hello Heather,
Glad to meet you. The critters caught all my chickens a few years ago. I have a huge chicken house. My son is buying more chicks next fall for his family. I told him to order me about twenty baby chicks. We are excited because we found a feed store close by that sells organic chicken feed without soy. Can't wait for my own fresh eggs again. Well, back to you. I know you will love all that goes on around here.

Welcome Heather and your daughter :) to Mary Jane's. Farm. You'll have so much fun here and how lovely that you can share this with your daughter. I have heard of the dorking chicken of all places at Farmville in FaceBook. I thought it was a make believe breed so you've taught me something today. How fun that you can have chickens that will lay a rainbow of colors. I truly miss having chickens since I live in the city and have fond memories of the ones we raised when I was a girl. Ours weren't so exotic though being just Rhode Island Reds and Bantams. Still they were sweet and we had the best eggs and fryers. So happy to meet you and know you'll love it here.

Hello Heather! A welcome from NJ. So glad you joined us.
We have a flock of Black Star chicks that we just got this week. We have had many flocks over the years and then we stopped raising them for awhile but now we are back into it again.
Would you mind sharing what you use to make your own feed? Are your growing your own ingredients.
Didn't realize soy was an issue in the feeds.
