We finally finished enough on our other buildings to downsize into our studio, my husband and I and our two kids. Then making our Farmhouse into a vacation rental. Look at Airbnb https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/1116650 that's our new listing. This is my newest attempt to work at home, mostly, yet still support our farm. We offer a veggie box, organically fed chicken eggs, and garden flowers all over the house. Many MJF touches all around. Plan a memorable family vacation. Experience, off grid, rural(yet very close to the ocean), farm life. See our self-sufficient lifestyle and our homestead. Thanks Farmgirls !

We have been trying to do all this without going into debt. We did get into a mortgage when we bought out our land partners. But that will be paid off in a few more years ( 2.75). We only build or develop with cash on hand. Often it feels like we have incredible good fortune, like all the universe comes in to support our cause.
We don't necessarily plan well, it overwhelms my PTSD Vet husband. We often realize a project that started out seeming rather simple soon became overwhelmingly complex. We have been amazing at upcycling -repurposing so many building materials. Light fixtures, windows, cupboards, our wonderful bathtub, old furniture. Even if we really need something we can't just reuse, we then get it on craigslist or try to make it from materials at hand.
I realize that sharing what we are doing and maybe inspiring others to take the leap is what we/I want to do. We have had some people stay from the city and they are so amazed at how quiet it is, how easy it is to live without grid tied power, and how great to use up all the veggies I give them in a weekend. Maybe they will think differently.

Oh my goodness, that is so charming!!!! Absolutely beautiful. I've always wanted to go to California, but not to see LA or any of the other big cities! Bookmarking your link! Being off-grid is highly intriguing, too!

Thanks so much Rachel !
I was really inspired by Mary Jane-started with her idea book so many years ago now. I think this is such a great opportunity for women to share what they are doing and what they think.
As Mary Jane said in one of the magazines hanging out in the outhouse ( sorry Mary Jane, but that way my husband reads them too). I've reinvented the farm so many times now. This is my current invention, but not my last !

I have been consistently inspired by MJ since 2003 - unfortunately, until I own my own spot of land (hopefully in Washington state), a lot of my inspiration has to remain nothing more than dreams. I totally give you and your husband respect for making your inspiration a reality!

Wow, that's beautiful, and good rates, too. Best of luck with this -- looks like you're already off to a great start with those lovely reviews. :)
