I'm really glad to be part of this community. Even though I've been an administrative assistant for almost my whole life, my real dream has been to work in the dirt with my hands. Wherever I've lived, I've planted and watched grow a few lovely flower gardens and a few containers with veggies, but I really want to learn to grow fruits and vegetables when my husband and I retire to our house in eastern Washington state.
I think I really must be a "closet" farmgirl, as I daydream constantly about working in my garden, raising some chickens, canning, and just taking care of my home, family, and land. Thank you so much for letting me share with you and for sharing with me your stories and experience.

Home is where your heart is.

Hello Jane, and Welcome! I'm on my lunch hour at work right now, and wish there were two of me--one to stay here and do the job I love and get paid to do, and another me to go home and get the garden planted (late for Ohio!) and spend time enjoying my chickens. I get it!!

Come on out of that closet and get your hands all muddy! You're among friends here.

What other hobbies and joys keep you busy? Looking forward to getting to know you better.

Cheers!

Liz

I'm so envious, Liz! I've never farmed (per se) and never raised chickens, but I really want to. I raised my 3 boys to know that dirt is their friend, so I'm no stranger to it. Any advice you care to give will be welcomed always!

Hi again,

Can you have chickens where you currently live? They're better than TV for entertainment. (we haven't had a TV in our home for 15 years--don't miss it, and continue to be shocked at what's considered "acceptable viewing content" these days. Yowsa!!), and so sweet.

You're fetchin' your boys up great if they consider dirt their friend--good for you!! Parenting is such a calling--I admire all folks who make that commitment, and will forever be grateful to my own parents for taking on 5 of us. I sit at your feet in awe and wonder...

Don't postpone joy,
Liz

Unfortunately, Liz, we can't have chickens where we live now. (It's a 55+ mobile home park.) I feel fortunate to have my 2 cats!

You're such a sweetheart to mention my "boys." In reality, they're all grown men now, but of course, will always be boys to me. I was a tomboy growing up, so I was very grateful to have had boys. Relatively speaking, they were pretty easy to raise (most of the time!).

I so agree with you about TV; 1600 channels and nothing on! I'm definitely looking forward to my chickens! Happiness to you and yours!

Welcome Jane, I am a native Californian who now lives near Spokane. Where will you be retiring to? We love it here. The four seasons, more space, all that. There are a lot of us Californians up here! We'll be looking forward to your arrival. In the meantime, I will look forward to getting to know you here on the Farm.

Hi Jane Marie- I saw your post right away because my name is also Jane Marie! I'm a kindergarten teacher and my kids call me Miss Jane. I just joined too and live in Northern CA (Mendocino County). That's so great you are going to be doing more gardening and growing your own food. I did a much bigger garden than I had planned this year because I found MJF and it inspired me. This is my first time growing a lot of veggies.
Look forward to talking to you, Jane

Hi Jane,
Welcome to the farm, it has been really good for me and I have learned so much through here and made so many sweet friendships. I love it here and I think you will too.

Or a trouble is what you make it!
And it isn't the fact that you're hurt that counts,
But only--how did you take it?
