Hi ladies-
One thing that my family did on a vaction when I was little was Paint your Own Ceramics.
If you have never seen one of these shops it is a great idea. They have shelves of bisque ware which is clay that has been molded or thrown into a shape and then fired through the first firing. This changes the chemical properties of the clay and permenantly changes them. Bisqueware is a little more fragile than finished pottery and has a dull surface that is porous. The color depends on the type of clay used to create the object.
So these Paint your Own stores buy figurines and dinnerware and such in Bisque. You pick out what you want to paint and they provide you with the glazes. Most people don't even realize it is glaze since most of it is the consistency of an acrylic paint.
My whole family, even my dad!, got involved and I think my parents spent more money than they bargained for since we all had so much fun painting. My sister did an awesome piece with a mermaid sitting on a rock. That was a pretty hard piece. I was pretty young so I made a bunch of the "Kilroy" shelf sitters and a few easy pieces.
Anyway I was just wondering if any other farmgirls have seen these shops or has tried this craft. Moscow is lucky to have two of these shops.

We have one in Searcy Arkansas. I've never been but people enjoy it. I have a kiln at school and can do it myself much cheaper than there. But they are great if you dont have your own supplies.
Jewelry, art, baskets, etc.

| My family has done ceramics for 3 generations now. My grandmother had a ceramics store where you could either do the paint your own thing or buy pieces that were already decorated. My mom and dad both enjoy throwing pottery as do I. Unfortunatly it can be a very expensive habit to have :) I love going home for holidays because we have 3 wheels and 2 kilns at home, but unfortunatly here in Idaho I don't have much access to playing with clay. |

Alee, how about cleaning original ceramic surfaces? This item has never been painted, but I wonder if I can clena it up a little. Would bleach/water work, or baking soda?

| I went to a local ceramic store and bought my cake topper for my wedding cake. I painted it and glazed it myself. It came out beautiful. The gown on th epiece looked just like mine! I have it in my china cabinet now. I love it! |

I used to do ceramics all the time with my Sis IL's when I lived in NY. My DH used to do them to. I have made them all the way from bisqueware (we called it greenware)to items that were already fired in the kiln. I have a whole Thanksiving dinner table set with all the usual trimmings & also pilgrims & indians that sit on chairs. It even has a cat & dog with their own bowls. I did an easter basket type container that holds candy. It has a bunny sitting on top with all kinds of candy under him. There are quite a few more. I don't know if they have those stores here in TX or not. I havent seen one. I usually just see those that are fired & ready to be painted at stores like Micheals or Hobby Lobby. I would like to do it again, even though I don't have much time, but it is fun to pull it all out at different holidays. My SIL also made a wedding topper for my cake. So cute.

I have never been to a shop like that..what fun!!
When I was in high school there was a shop in our town that sold Hydrocal I think they called it that was like chalkware I think..we painted it and varnished it..with acrylic paints..and I did some of that back then...and it was fun. I would have loved to do something nicer!!
