Reading has always been one of life's greatest pleasures. Historical fiction, nonfiction, romance, cookbooks - they all bring me joy. Even as a child growing up in a small Indiana river town, I'd leave my parents at their jewelry store and trudge five blocks to the library, where I would spend hours upon hours with my nose in the "forbidden" books that I couldn't possibly check out at such a tender age. My love affair with the library has never ended, but now I'm an ebook girl. Here in Marion County, IN, we're blessed to have a huge digital book selection with thousands of titles tied to Kindle. I always have 5-6 books checked out, yet I haven't been inside a library in more than a year. My job has sent me to Seattle multiple times lately and reading on the plane is a lot easier when I have all my magazines and books on my iPad. (In fact, MaryJanesFarm and The Good Old Days are the only two magazines I still get in printed form.)
My question is - do you still prefer the traditionally bound book or are you like me and grab your iPad, Kindle, or Nook when you want to escape for a while?

there was a discussion about this last week- i prefer the printed page....
my memories as a child of learning to read and all of the places that reading has taken me...ahhhhhh.....

the printed page! definitely. you can touch it, smell it, annotate it and pass it on to others--kinda hard to do that with a kindle... i like the convenience of a kindle, but the permanence of bound books.

I much prefer the printed page. After the pictures of my kids, grandkids and the rest of the family, my books are my most precious possessions. Kindles, etc are nice when traveling, but they'll never replace or be as wonderful as holding a book.

I use both. While I can use my iPad outdoors if the light is right, it's not best for sitting under the leaf-laden trees with my bare feet in in the grass, reading and occasionally drinking in the beauty around me. That's my favorite way to read. But when indoors I usually use my iPad, and I appreciate the ability to increase font size or pictures and to click links to enhance my reading experience. So which do I prefer? Both. The tactile and the visual are both appeased with the two different forms, and I think they're equal in value. :)

I love holding the book, cozy up with a cup of coffee or tea and just read! I love paper books so much that now I'm making my very own journals/notebooks. So much fun!

The printed page for me as well. I was given a Nook as a gift (I did ask for it) but I found that it wasn't for me and I ended up giving it to my mother. I love the feel of a book in my hands, the paper, the heaviness, just everything. I've been a avid reader almost my whole life and I've always felt that when I hold a book in my hands I hold magic.

My favorite is definitely the paper format. I do struggle occasionally with my husband's Kindle. It's a fast, easy, and inexpensive way to order e-books, but I find reading them a little hard on the eyes, especially after having been on the computer most of the day.

The printed page is my favorite. I have an extensive book collection and love them all. Also, I can lay out several of them at once and compare recipes, knitting projects, etc. I'll stick to traditional books. Besides a dropped book usually doesn't break. Also, I would be devastated to loose a Kindle in my travels (although most of my traveling is found in a book). A book can be easier to replace.

I worked in an independent bookstore for almost 5 years and have amassed over 1500 books. I LOVE the printed book! Having said that, I also love my nook. A dear friend gifted me with a nook color during Christmas and I mainly used it for downloading magazines and free books. Unfortunately my grands realized that I had put some kiddie stuff on it for them and so they commandeered it. Just at that time QVC was having a special on the hd. So, I have the hd and they have the color. I enjoy it because its lightweight and goes everywhere and I use the same apps that are on my phone and my Windows 8 on it. I use it at night for when I'm reading in bed but I still read my "real" books. Nothing can replace the written word bound between two covers!

I love books. Real live books. A friend of mine at work reads ebooks on her smart phone--egads! I would think, that after a while, one's finger might rebel from all the sliding. I just enjoy the covers, the book notes, the pages, the smell of the pulp. It's important to me to have a real book because I spend all day on a computer and reading for me, is for transporting myself into other worlds, not maintaining the same one I'm in at the office. If I used an e-reader or smart phone, I'm afraid I wouldn't enjoy myself or be able to disconnect like I want to.

I prefer the printed page. I have a read a couple of e-books on my laptop, but it is so heavy to hold on my lap by the hour! So, I probably wouldn't mind the much lighter Kindle or Nook, but can't see myself giving up the pleasure of turning the physical printed page of a real, live book.

I have a Kindle but my preference is printed page. Love the smell and feel of old books especially. The Kindle is nice to use while traveling or visiting my dd because I can download from anywhere so I don't miss out on finding a good Kindle deal.

gotta be a real live old fashioned book, especialy used books that I find at flea markets and thrift stores, imagining all the other people who read this book, or even finding one that someone has written their review, and personal thoughts inside...

I love a "real" book, but also like my Kobo e-reader for the convenience of slipping it into my purse.
But still nothing beats a paper book (I also love the smell of a bookstore). :)

You know, I'm a big advicate of printed books and swore I would never buy a Nook or iPAD for reading. But one of my friends showed me how her Nook works and while I still read mostly books, there is something to be said for a device that can hold so many books and magazines especially when traveling.

My sister got me a kindle for Christmas and I love it! I will still buy some books, but the kindle has allowed me to read new authors for free without having to leave my house to get them. They both have their advantages and I will continue to read both :)

Books are my one great weakness as well. I love the feel of books and nothing beats the smell (book lovers KNOW what I mean). But I do like the convenience of my Kobo e-reader, I take the bus to work so it's not quite as bulky and takes up less room in my backpack.
I usually have two or three going at the same time.

I prefer the printed page. I even love looking across the room to the table where my current book always lies. Just seeing the book waiting for me, bookmark sticking out, gives me a cozy feeling.
