My daughter has horrid migraines. She has tried a lot of things. I'm just wondering if any of you ladies have any ideas on this.

I'm so sorry your daughter suffers from migraines. They are horrible. I used to get them and found that drinking strong, black coffee really helps to open up the constricted blood vessels. Dark chocolate helps too. I started taking calcium/magnesium awhile ago and it has all but vanished all of my headaches.

Best of luck to you both, I'm sure the others will have a lot of suggestions too.

Keep a diary and try to identify if certain foods set it off. I have a girlfriend that found out anything with a minute amount of sulphites set her migranes off.

Butcher's broom. Magnesium under the tongue works very well too. Magnesium is best if you can find it in a capsule form, then open the capsule and hold under the tongue--works fast too. Tei fu oil massaged onto the head, peppermint oil may also help.

Thank you ladies so much for the ideas. If anyone has more I am collecting them for her. It has gotten so bad. She gets them all the time and I can see how it is affecting her life. Last week she got one that was worse than ever. Just breaks my heart. Like it is sucking all her life energy. She has been to Drs and tried so many things but some of these things here I think are new, so maybe we can find the answer. She does keep a journal but still hasn't gotten any connections. But maybe she will. I will definitely have her read all these posts. Maybe something can help her. There is so much crud in our food these days with the GMOs and MSGs and all. Sheesh. Thanks again Ladies. Please post if anyone has more ideas.

Hi.I suffer from severe migraines too, and it took several doctors to figure it out. None of the migraine meds worked for me, nor did the antidepressants which are supposed to help. Finally, when even my scalp was burning and stinging a dermatologist sent me to his good friend who was an allergy and immunologist MD. He tested me for food allergies and environmental allergies. I ended up being allergic to most plants and the foods that stem from the plant family i.e. allergic to ragweed, allergic to cantaloupe in the ragweed family. That is one example. I ended up being allergic to all kinds of healthy foods such as carrots, apples, parsley, all grains even oats, barley etc. So I began taking Ketorolac (Torodal) which is an Rx. It staves off many migraines and is a super anti-inflammatory but can only be taken in small doses for a few days each month. But the other tip my allergy MD gave me is the second I feel a migraine coming on (I get deep inner ear pain which triggers the occipital nerve from the histamine reaction) is to take a Benadryl. This has helped immensely and kept migraines at a more manageable pain level or staved them off entirely. I switched to no scented products, use various cooking oils for lotion (such as olive oil, grapeseed, coconut oil). In the spring when pollens are in the air I was told to take a Benadryl every night because it is a histamine reaction triggering my headaches. Since my inner ear is so sensitive I also get barometric pressure triggered migraines. I started wearing ear planes on days I know there will be temperature and humidity swings. It took 3 specialists to rule out other reasons for migraine. It can be related to other causes, such as blood sugar levels, neck issues, and as in my case Oral Allergy Syndrome. A cup of coffee does help and no reaching above my head has helped. Do not use opiates as they only trigger rebound migraines and cause a spiral effect. Best to you. Annie

Sounds like your daughter is dealing with something either environmental or food. I used to get them really bad monthly where I was down for 3 days at a time. I've found that going to the chiropractor regularly, eating organic foods, exercising and making sure I keep all synthetic foods out of my system has really helped. Something else she can do is take epsom salt baths, this helps relax the muscles and get some magnesium in your system. I would steer clear of the prescriptions as they did little to nothing to help me and can tend to end up being a problem themselves in the end.

I would also say that she needs to be careful to not ingest anything that has artificial sweeteners, flavors and coloring in it. Sometimes those things can just totally wack your body out (nerotoxins). I'm highly sensitive to artificial sweeteners.

She should also try doing a detox to get all the nasty stuff out of her body. We carry a lot of toxins and don't realize it till they're built up.

I'll pray for her.

April

I was having migraines and turned out I needed some glasses :) Also I used Hylands Migraine Tablets which gave some relief, at least they took the edge off the migraines when I got them. I also avoided dairy, chocolate and caffeine (which really didn't affect it either way since they were brought on by my eyes). Anyway now I am getting tested for lymes disease so maybe the lymes is behind everything (including my weakened eyesight since previously I had great vision!) I would definitely get some Migraine Tablets because they did take the edge off, not the entire migraine but it sure toned it down to a headache :)

My lifelong migrains stopped when I cut egg yolks out of my diet. I found out when the dr. tried to put me on the estrogen patch and I had a migrain by that afternoon. In my case, it was the estrogen in egg yolks that do it. Something so simple, but it was the end of two or three time a week of agony.

I get very serious headaches and my dad taught me years ago to slather muscle rub on my forehead and the back of my neck. It sounds odd, I know, but it really works. It might not take it away completely, but it does alleviate the intensity, that's for sure!

My decades of migraines ceased when I discontinued oral contraceptives. They had started before I took the pill, but for some reason I haven't had a single migraine since I went off the medication.

Sorry to hear about your daughter's headaches. My mom had serious migraines for years and medications, diets, etc offered no relief. She also has back problems due to degenerative arthritis and two years ago she had a series of spine surgeries to correct some pressure on her spinal cord that was affecting her balance. After the second surgery her migraines dissapeared and she has been symptom free for over a year and a half now. The spinal surgeon said pressure on the spinal cord is a fairly common cause of migraines but most regular doctors don't know about it because spinal surgery is relatively rare in the realm of healthcare for the average adult. So April might be onto something with her suggestion about going to the chiropractor...if there is any possibility of problems with the alignment of the spinal system it might be worthwhile seeing a specialist to rule that out as a contributing cause for migraines.

Cheers! ~ Marilyn

I suffer from them too. I have found that drinking a caffinated beverage helps as it shrinks the blood vessels that causes the pressure and gets them moving around in there. Also, a dab of peppermint oil rubbed on her temples will do wonders. I do have to take meds for the extremely evil ones, but both of these do so much to take the edge off!

I get them when there are drastic changes in the barometric pressure so I use Bio-freeze on the back of my neck and usually drink something really hot to keep the blood vessels from constricting. I think it depends on the person what works for each. I also do the chiropractor. He is a great help in keeping the immune system in shape by getting regular adjustments.

levisgranny, pressure changes bring on the migraines for me too. And low blood sugar. Due to gastritis( from surgery 2 yrs ago), I can't have caffine, like in tea. I am taking Butterbur with some success. This was recommended to me by my osteopath md. I eat as healthy as possible and take a nightly mag supplement. If I take the imetrex nasal spray right away, I can get rid of it. Also I take Corgard(it's for blood pressure) to prevent them. Corgard has been a lifesaver. I suffered with daily migraines for 2 years and was house bound. Hormones play a big roll in migraines. That includes thyroid hormones. It controls everything. Get a Dr to run a thyroid panel, not just a TSH.

Laura, I know i'm catching this thread a little late, but my younger son and i get migraines. I find that when I use a cold rice (eye) pack (that i made myself or you can buy one) this significantly helps. I also take 2 excedrin (when i'm not too nauseas to take it). I also made a nasal inhaler with a combo of peppermint and lavender oils to inhale and this has helped us both a lot.

If the migraine is real severe, she could also take 1 antihistamine in combination to this and nap, and darken the room if you can. Bright lights make migraines worse. It should make a world of difference. I even bought my son a diffuser for his room.

I'd like to stress that the cool pack is likely the most helpful. I made one that was bigger than a regular eye mask, to cover a portion of the top of my head and that would cover my eyes at the same time.

Btw- long before we knew we had migraines, the doctors had sent both my son and I have to have an MRI of the brain, just to make sure there wasnt anything else going on.

One day, years ago I had a migraine while at an appt, well the lady I had gone to see asked me if she could massage the back of my neck. I'm telling you my migraine went away! Maybe some massage therapy on her neck would be a good idea.

I'd like to suggest a combo of two things Connie recommended: try an ice pack on the back of the neck - actually a little higher than the neck on the Occipital bones. These are the first major bumps on your skull that you reach if you run your fingers up the back of the neck to your head. Some slight pressure there followed by a little bit of massage (it can be very tender, though) and the recline with that cold rice pack against those bones and see what happens.

Everyone has what works for them - this really helped me and it certainly doesn't hurt to try.

BTW for a slight chuckle on a serious topic, I had to put "recline" because I can never remember if it is "lay down" or "lie down" so I didn't even try!!
