I'm just heading out to collect the afternoon eggs and a car comes down the drive, don't reconize it, or the lady that gets out, walk over figureing shes selling something or lost, ask her iof I can help her and she says just a minuet, gotta get the box out of the trunk...takes out said box, and I can hear very faint cheeping...she hands me the box and tells me they bought 6 ducklings for their kids for easter (and I think oh crud), husband got a plastic kids pool for them to live in, (I think ,that'll work, pan of water and food, and some shavings or straw), they put them in the pool that eve, kids got out next afternoon to play with them and start crying, cause the 2 that are now in a box in my arms are standing on the other 4 and they are dead, I thinking ok, it happens, but then women tells me that these 2 are mean, cause they drowned the other 4, I say, they were in the water pan, she says "NO" they were in their pool, you mean the pool was full of water, well yes they are ducks are they not...they are babies, ducklings will drown if they have no way out of the water...so I'm looking at the ducklings and realize they smell like bleach, did you put bleach in the water they were in, I'm not studid, I used pool chlorine, OMG, you not only drowned them, you poisened them too, well we did not know they were so messy and smelled, and they would poop on the kids when they were holding them, they are ducks, not lap dogs, well do you want them or not, I say, I'll take them and try to save them, pick them up and realize they are skin and bones, what were you feeding them, well we just sprinkled their food on the water in the morn, that should have been enough, they are ducks, not goldfish...I will do my best to save them, as I walk away and she chases after me and says, well I want $50.00 for them, are you crazy, they are 3/4 dead and if you don't leave now, I will be reporting you to the SPCA and Sheriffs dept, she huffed and puffed and got in her car and left...there are days , I swear...!!!

so very sad, but yes, there are stupid people hurting and killing animals everyday. Not because they are mean ... just so very clueless! I hope the last two will make it for you.

Wow! That woman takes the cake for stupidity! I hate it when people buy animals for holidays and don't know anything about how to care for them.

Yes, this happens every day, unfortunately. I hope these 2 make it and they thrive under your love and care. This is how I got about 15 Cornish Cross chickens last year. Tractor Supply sells them and people think they will be laying chickens. And they grow so fast it scares people. Tractor Supply needs to educate people when they come in to buy chicks. They need to tell them what each breed is for. This way people don't buy the wrong birds. It's good for me though. I got them at about 6 weeks old and nearly ready to butcher for just a few dollars each. But really, people need to ask questions and be more informed when buying FARM animals for their kids. They sure are cute when they're little. But ducks are nasty and they stink to high heaven and make some pretty good messes. But that is about the stupedest thing I've heard lately.

Tina, thank the good Lord you were there for what was left of them. It is a problem with people not being fully educated on the animals when they get them, even then some people don't take care of their animals. It's all for a reason that we don't understand as of yet. Please keep us informed of how they are doing!

Im glad the little fellows are doing well under your care Tina. It always makes my heart hurt when I go into some of the feed stores this time of year and the idiots are keeping the poor little chicks too warm. They will be all panting and such...sheesh do they not have eyes. Laura

I learned a new phrase Friday from a co-worker who grew up in the South that sums up my take on that gal...Poor Honey!

I know that phrase, Paula. Poor Honey! It's an expression of unbelief. The lady that helped raised us said that often when we couldn't get our way. LOL Marly

emily, if I had not been holding the box with the ducklings in there, and had a grandson standing next to me, I probally would be in jail for knocking her butt into the dirt..
they are still alive and active, eating, drinking and pooping, just like ducklings should, so i am hopefull they will live long duck lives...

Well, Tina, I am glad your grandson was standing next to you. We wouldn't want you to go to jail. Just calling the ASPCA would been a good enough threat. Marly

Oh my goodness! What a story. People really have gotten pathetic. I'm glad you are going to help those poor creatures. I feel sorry for her kids, too.

I never understand why people think this is a good idea, to buy ducklings and chicks and bunnies for Easter. A farm nearby sells bunnys and chicks each year for Easter, and it really gets my hackles up, because they are a well known and very vocal pro-life Catholic family, and I always wonder why they never consider the value of lives of these poor babies they sell to stupid people like the one you've posted about--most of them die from carelessness and that's a real crime to me. They sell them for such a small amount, too. If they cost a bit more, I'm sure people wouldn't a) buy them and b)not take as good a care because they actually had to shell out dough.
Two juveniles ducks showed up a few years back in my mothers front yard. Someone had taken them to the creek near her property, because, you know, ducks who have lived their time in a plastic swimming pool and a suburban back yard and have had people feed them and only know HUMANS are going to make it in a creek bed. I ended up calling a friend who has a nice little pond very close to the house to take them because they simply wouldn't make it any where else. She has no dogs or other animals to hurt them and they are now her "pets" and even come inside.
I also know people who have dyed the chicks, ducks and rabbits in colors for easter.

Sorry for not posting earlier, but I was so appalled I had to regain composure (took me a few days!). I just can't believe this woman. No regards for a living creature at all! I hate animals being abused weather purposefully or by ignorance. :( I need to go to my dad's and get my rabbit hutch out of the barn, I bet right about now would be a good time to rescue a bunny for my home!

ducks are doing great, they are pekins, as I suspected, they are starting to feather, and I pretty sure they are both drakes, they have graduated from pie tin water pool to a plastic, large dog bowl pool

I don't know a thing about ducks or ducklings but I do know you don't put them in bleach water. Omg! Thank you for rescuing them. Glad they're doing well.
