I would love to see a MaryJane book about entrepreneurship--how to find your passions and make business models out of them (large and small). I think we can all agree that MJ herself is a successful businesswoman, and I would love to read a whole book (or even a section of a future book) focusing on her ideas and philosophy on this topic.

A few years ago Maryjane spoke at a luncheon meeting for Spokane University Women's club. I thought at the time it was a fairly odd choice since she was more country crafts/life. Somehow I was involved through a friend and I was called by the member in charge of programs and wanted to "know about MJ and maybe introduce her. I declined that there were others more qualified. This woman also said should the group in charge of tickets and checking people in wear overalls and straw hats (guess they were going for a country hick them: ) I said no she was more about aprons etc. so they settled on aprons. MJ walked in in a beautiful grey suit, hair in a french roll looking very professional. MJ had a table of her stuff on a table but people weren't really interested in it UNTIL at the beginning of the talk she mentioned she got a million and half dollar deal (think I'm close to the amount) deal from a publisher for her yet unwritten book! My goodness did the University women take notice then!! She had them in the palm of her hands the rest of the meeting. On a side note my friend thought it would be fun that our table should all wear aprons. I went along. One of the questions at the questions and answer session after MJ's talk was "Why are those women over there all wearing aprons? : )

| I would also like to see a book about starting a business. Really finding something you love and can make a living at. I am lucky enough that I will be moving to rural Idaho soon and I struggle with ideas that will allow me to maintain a house and farm out of the rat race, but yet being able to be out in the marketplace with whatever I choose. |

I would like to read MJ book on starting a business. I have crafted all my life and had a love for all things old and remakeable(guess that is cause never had money to buy new). Over the years I've made some great things.
I just do not know how to market what I make. Plus it comes so natural to me,I feel like I'm taking advantage of someone. So most of my creations are given away. I know the folks that receive them are thankful and I'm glad to make folks happy. But some loose change would not go amiss.
We have large Mennonite Community where I live. I so admire these wonderful people and all they do. They may call themselves "Plain",but there is nothing plain about them.

I would love to see a book about farmgirl entrepreneurs! Full of tips and such for starting your own business, and stories about those of us who already have.
One of my favorite business books is "The Business of Bliss". I can see something similar, but in MaryJanesFarm style!

Stephanie, write the Home Office and put in your request for a book about entrepreneurship. Who knows, maybe MaryJane already has that idea floating about! She always loves hearing from Farmgirls and all of their ideas!

I would love to see this as well. No one has it down, with class, substance, beauty and efficiency like MaryJane!!!!

I would buy any book that Mary Jane wrote! Goodness, I cannot imagine someone more qualified. She runs a farm, a store front, designs fabric for Moda, writer ... goodness, I would like to know how she manages her time! I'm just a small business owner and have a difficult time with time! lol
There's a thread on farming and all the blood, sweat and tears that goes into it - farming is not any different than being a business owner. As a small business owner (store front), I may not have livestock but I have everything else. Sometimes I feel I work 24-7! It's certainly not like in the movies! lol But, I love my job and enjoy coming into work every morning!
While waiting for Mary Jane to publish her book, if you would like some suggestions, send me an e-mail and I will forward some that I've enjoyed reading. They are very general and I have found none specific to the type of business I manage. In my opinion many of the business books are general. I learned a lot via trial and error!

I had a strange feeling when reading these posts. I stumbled over them but, it seems like a God-directed stumble. You see, for several days I've been thinking about asking for some input from 'Sisters' but really didn't know where to post. Here's the thing...
I help small businesses with the content performance and usability of their websites. But, my heart is, and always has been, with Home-based businesses (which is what I have). I've been thinking for a while now about changing my niche to home-based businesses...only. I know that would be a better fit for who I am. But even though, these days, a website is a must for any business, I wonder if the need/demand would be there.
Seeing how y'all think along that line, I'd really like to hear your thoughts on whether you think that would be a move I should make.

Wanda, I would suggest you follow your heart!

This is a wonderful idea! It would be neat to showcase various Farmgirls in the book - I know whenever I read your stories I'm always inspired and encouraged to keep going in the direction I'm taking with my business.
Along the same lines, is there a place where we can see what our fellow farmgirls are doing, business - wise, so we can hook up and not only purchase from them, but also help spread the word about their businesses?

| I love this idea. I am coming out of a almost 8 year severe illness and wondering what I am going to do the rest of my life. Farm to Table commodities are going gang busters right now. What could we do, raise or sell to the city population. For sure they pay more than rural populations. We have a Co-op within 30 miles of our town that is trucking farm related items to Denver and getting a premium price. I have personally been to one of their meetings and it is very impressive what they can do on a small amount of land and what their returns. |
