I know that chickens can't have raw rice, but I was wondering if it is ok to feed chickens cooked rice pudding. I made some rice pudding yesterday and it came out GROSS!!!
I hate to totally waste it, but I don't want to make the chickens sick either.
Thanks for any input.

Liz

I give my chickens leftovers rice all the time. I had no idea it would be bad for them. It is always cooked. I feed them all my leftovers from the kitchen. And I haven't killed one yet. Thank God!

I think the problem in raw rice is that is swells in the crop. I killed some half grown chicks years ago by giving them half cooked pinto beans. I think fully cooked rice should be fine. However the pudding and sugar might give them a little diahrea if they eat a big bunch of it and aren't used to it.

Oh. I hadn't thought about the sugar part of it. Maybe if I freeze it in small cups and let them peck at it a little at a time? ( when it's not so cold) Maybe it would give them something to do and they wouldn't be able to eat it all at once. Do you thnk that would be better?

The freezing idea is great!

That's something we do in the zoo world to enrich all kinds of critters.

Would make for good summer treats too!
