The moles have virtually destroyed my garden. Last year was a nightmare. Anyone have any tips for killing moles in a vegetable garden? I have tried drowning them out. I got a few, but not enough.

Kerri - My husband SWEARS the chicken wire fence he installed for me last year made all the difference. We didn't have a single mole after that! He dug the chicken wire in, burying it about 6 inches down into the dirt all the way around the perimeter. It also kept out the other critters we were having trouble with like rabbits and a big ol' determined ground hog. We had tried drowning them out, we had tried mothballs, nothing worked. A good friend gave us a whole bunch of chicken wire that he had sitting in his garage, so I can't give you any idea as to what it might cost you to do it, but believe me - it works!!! Good luck! - Nini

We spread moth moles all around the garden. It came them away for a while. Good luck.

Spearmint gum, One of my fellow gardeners at a gardeninbg club saw moles in her site and put chewed spearmint gum outside the hole and when they get it they eat it and cannot digest it and die.

God bless,

Caster oil put it in a garden sprayer and saturate the area the are in the will not eat in the area you spray and will move on. But that said you are just relocating them not killing.

Thanks so much for putting the information about the putting the fence 6 inches into the ground. We have a massive rabbit problem here and we know that we have to put up a fence this year, just we were unsure of the details. Thanks so much!

I had a problem with gophers and I put Oleander leaves in the hole and the leaves disappeared, so did the gopher. They love them but they are poison.
I have heard you can put Juicy Fruit gum in the hole and they will eat the wrapper and everything. It will kill them. Just use gloves so you don't leave your scent on the piece of gum.
Also I got one of those beeping things you put in the garden and it looks like a yard light, that must be working too.

uugghhh! I have 5 acres of gophers! hubby uses traps to kill them,,, but we have finally resigned ourselves to having to use poison... we live out in old wheat farm lands,,, many of which have been left to return to unplanted fields,,, and so the rodents have re-populated and until the coyote & hawk/owl/eagle populations grows these gophers will continue to be very distructive.... I have lost many trees because of them... It is a major concern for the safety of the horses around us too.

Now that being said, I had heard that if you stuff used litter litter down the hole it will cause the gophers to tunnel else where... has anyone tried this yet? I might give it a try... goodness knows w/2 kitties I have plenty poopy scoopy at my disposal,, lol!

Grace,
Someone did mention putting used kitty litter down the holes. My yard is so small I would smell it all the time, but it may work for you.

Had an issue with that one time and someone gave us a magazine (i think it was Country Store or something similar to that name) that sells a metal windmill with a marble in kne end of the top. When the wind blows the thing spins and makes the marble rattle and the moles hate the noise and disappear. Wish I could remember the name of the magazine cuz it really worked for us and they were a pretty cheap investment! Good luck!
