Jonni - I saw the picture and all I heard in my head was my Grandma's famous phrase of disbelief, "Eghads and little fish hooks!" Does not look like Anne to me! Unbelievable. Hugs - Nini

Well, she's cute, but she ain't no Anne, that's for sure. This one is too sexy and that's not what Anne of Green Gables portrayed at all. What are they thinking?

Nini, that's as good an exclamation as I could come up with! Kris, she's way too sexy, and um...not a ginger-haired, freckled face girl like Anne. And what's with the shirt? It's like she should be on the cover of a romance novel.

LOL...did you click on the link to the book set? I think the readers have spoken. That publisher needs to pull those books and burn them and go back to the drawing table on the cover photo. All I can think is that they were trying to appeal to modern teens. Unfortunately modern teens don't read and those that do would relate much more with the original look of Anne. It makes no sense though to have a cover picture that doesn't reflect the character described in the books.

I know, Siobhan. I can't help but wonder what, if anything, the reviews would do, though? As a mother, I would never buy that edition of Anne of Green Gables, so I'm certain there will be many ending up at Half Price Books and Big Lots across the nation!

It's ridiculous. The more I thought about it last night, the angrier I got. To me it's more than simply changing the "concept" of a character for marketability--it's a complete disrespect to the book, and, if I may be so bold, a sexualization (so common today in media related to tweens and teens) of a character that I love dearly.

I agree the picture isn't appropriate for Anne of Green Gables... but I'm having trouble actually finding a picture of the book cover. NPR is a pretty reputable source, but they don't actually show the book design, only the picture that is reportedly on the cover. And when I click on the link to Amazon there's no cover image either. Does anyone have a link showing the actual book? It's important to keep in mind, too, that (as far as I've read) this was an independent edition made on CreateSpace - not the kind of thing you'll likely see popping up in a book store near you. Thank goodness for that!
To be honest, I'd be more upset if that was a still from an Anne of Green Gables movie... at least if you're reading the books you'd soon find that the cover is a misrepresentation. In general, I stay away from covers that depict characters because even if they're "accurate" in terms of hair color, etc. they're never what I picture in my head.

You can Google it under new Anne of Green Gables. What were they thinking?

How can Anne with an "e" be anything else except red-headed and freckled?
Love her! Read and own all the books and the movie with Megan Fellows. She will always be Anne to me.

I thought the actress on the PBS version seemed to fit the character. Didn't they even consider the text for this selection?

Looks more like "Anne Does Green Gables." What's with the seductive cover?

Yeah not to impressed with the cover, yes the hair colour is wrong, but more the pose, it's a little too adult.

Did anyone see a freckle I didn't and since when is Anne blonde? I don't think this is going to make it anywhere. How can an orphan like Anne be portrayed so sexy. Come on she was an orphan. And how can they keep they part in where she talks about her hair. Geesh!

Not the innocent red-haired girl that I came to know and love when I read the book with my daughter. Somebody made a poor decision. Anne Marie, I agree with you; too adult.

Gah. Looks more like Lolita. This must be what publishers think our young ladies expect nowadays. Shame on their mothers if they buy into it for them. |
