Our little powder room on the first floor had a slow leak which has ruined the floor. Hubby said that since we insurance isn't going to cover it, we are going to change out the floor with something other than wood. Which then led to, well, if we are ripping up the floors, putting in a new toilet, then we might as put a newer vanity in. Which then led to, well, if we are doing that, then we have to repaint in there and if we are going to repaint in there, then we can get rid of the 90's "wall of mirror and lights" and get new lighting and a much smaller mirror. See where this is leading? Yep, we are remodeling the whole thing.

I went to Home Depot to just start thinking about the options available and oh dear, was I overwhelmed. I really have no sense of style to start with and can't picture what something will look like ahead of time.

We know we want more of a natural slate looking floor, but will probably go with porcelain instead of slate. That's it. That's as far as we've gotten.

Lately, my hubby has been talking about wanting us to build our own home. If I can't even making decisions for a teeny little bathroom, I'm fairly certain, I will never be able to make choices for a full house!

So, I'm open to any suggestions, advice, resources, let me hear your own dreams, big and small for a tiny powder room.

Thats a good idea tbh. Start with an idea of a style you want to try to re-create over even simplify it even more by deciding on a colour or two. The idea will soon start to grow. Also maybe cut pictures, paint sample schemes , fabric swatches and put them on an ideas board, it doesnt have to all go together ar first, just gather thoughts and take it from there :)

So much to do, so little time :)

What is your style? I love the little vanities that look like dressers. I will post some pictures later. Just want you to give us some idea of your aesthetic and colors.

Hi,
White to light gray is a good neutral color for the walls. You can go with blue towels, rugs and curtains. Since the walls are neutral, you can change to reds, or pinks or greens for the towels, curtains, etc if you get tired of any color. Hope that helps.

Since you don't quite know what you like for sure, like was said get a bunch of mags, and cut out all the things you like, and then put them together and try to find out what it is that you like about them, and the direction you want to go from there.

We redid our little bath, the only one we have. We used the mottled brown porcelin tiles from Home Depot,on the floor, bead board painted white, half way up the walls, white 5x8 tiles from Home Depot, over the tub, a small vanily with a composite sink, and a new toilet. We kept our old bathtub. I painted the walls the color of a paper bag. We put in a new light over the sink and a smaller mirror. Everything came together wonderfully well. I spent more time picking out the toilet than anything else. Our new bath makes me happy everyday. Home Depot is a great p lace to find stuff, you can look at it all, and see if it goes together. Have fun.

Greetings from the morning side of the hill.

You've got a lot of good advise. My two cents, keep the color palate neutral, (floors, walls, ect) and get classic fixtures. Then add color and style with you accessories. You can always change your rugs and towels. Fixtures and floor is harder to change. Oh, and have fun!

Thank you for all your advice. We really are overwhelmed with all the choices. Neither one of us is into design at all or shopping. Here's one I found that I really like the components of. http://www.houzz.com/photos/869087/Wallner-Builders-traditional-powder-room-milwaukee I'm not sold on the color of the wall though. It has the floor I like and I think the vanity style. Do you think a more neutral wall color would look good?

That is a great looking bathroom. I agree the wall color is not so good. How about an olive green or maybe pull out a brown/gold tone from the flooring?

lol actually I like the wall color, it was the color of my last bathroom! Before we moved here! lol However, I don't think that color goes well with black (we had a chocolate and that blue color combo going on even in the towels). I think other colors go better with black.

This is going to sound crazy but I think red goes really really well with black.

Wall color though is the last thing to worry about, the fixtures and flooring is the thing you want to be concrete on, wall color, towels and accessories are cheaper to change later.

lol Terri. Actually I've seen a lot of beautiful red rooms, I'm full of brave women in my family apparently! lol haha One of my autns actually painted her living room red and it was really pretty. I think the key is the right shade, and the right finish-gloss, flat, etc.

He-he, my kitchen is merlot or something like that. A deeper kind of red. There isn't a whole lot of wall space though so it was easy to be daring in there. I tend to be drawn more to yellows and reds.
