The spammer has absolutely no access to your email, your personal contacts or anything else. This scam relies on you responding to the email by clicking on the link and entering your information on the site they link to. As long as you do not respond they do not even know your real email address. All they were able to do is annoy ya'll by sending a copy and paste email by clicking on your name and choosing the "Send an email to so and so" option. When an email is sent through the forum it opens a new window that they paste their message in to and hit send. You can see exactly what they saw by clicking on my name and sending me an email through the chat room. There is no way for them to send an attachment or an executable file through the chat room. Simply opening an email that has the subject heading "Sent From MaryJanesFarm Farmgirl Connection by XXX" will not import a virus or anything. Clicking on links on the inside is another story...
Over the past 4 years that I have been approving chat room members I have noticed that the spammers are getting more and more sophisticated in their methods for gaining access to public chat rooms like ours. We manually activate all the chat room registrations to keep as many as possible from gaining access to our chat room.
There will be some that are able to sneak in under the radar. The best thing to do if this happens is let us know here at the farm. A post in the technical support forum is the best place for us to notice as quickly as possible (http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/snitz/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=2) Email is also a great way to contact us: Iris@maryjanesfarm.org goes right to me.
In the mean time here are some handy links on how to protect yourself from spam.
Out beyond the city’s tinsel and orange dome, the days are truly bright, and the nights truly dark, enough that a body can get their rest. ~Small Farmer's Journal
