I am getting into cooking with cast iron. I see that there are pie plates in cast iron available. Unfortunately not from Lodge...however-has anyone used a cast iron pie plate? If so, did you like it? Thanks! |

I make pies in cast iron skillets. The crust is wonderful, the other thing you can try is baking the pie of the lowest rack in your oven.
Greetings from the morning side of the hill. |

I'm likek Kennie Lyn, I've used a regular skillet to bake pies. They come out great.

I hadn't thought of that. Great Idea- I will try it. Lots cheaper than a $25 pie pan!! |

Yes, a great idae. I just made a pineapple upside-down cake in my 10" iron skillet recently and it was fabulous. I'm going to try my next apple pie the same way.
Kennie Lyn, do you mean put the cast iron "pie pan" on the lowest level? What does that do? Same cook time/temps? |

Mary,
You will love cooking with cast iron once you get used to it. Sometimes things do stick but I use the nonstick spray. I have never had a cast iron pie plate. I grew up in a family that always used cast iron and I still do today. I have other cookware but I always love baking my cornbread and biscuits in cast iron. Oven baked chicken and oven baked pork chops are delicious fixed in them also. Years ago when they were still with us, my mother and grandmother would make old fashioned apple stack cakes and pineapple upside down cake in them. Yum Yum!!!
Blessings,
Judy

Thanks everyone - love your memories Judy. I just got home from the library with a cast iron cooking cookbook. Can't wait to get started! |
