I love to eat oatmeal, especially when the weather starts to turn cold. I always ate the rolled oats growing up, but recently found the steel cut "Irish" oats. Anyone else eat these? They have an amazing taste- more nutty and a better texture IMHO than the rolled. I still like rolled oats...but...

I love irish oatmeal and I often make pancakes with it....the fam loves them!

Alee, I love steel cut oats! In fact, I couldn't stand oatmeal until I tried the steel cut, which I cook only 9-12 minutes so it stays chewy. The rolled oats make great granola and cookies, so we use a lot of it, too... just not in "oatmeal".

| I was making my oatmeal this morning and trying to get them as creamy as possible. Do the steel cut get creamy? I must try them. Off to Trader Joe's I go! |

| Katie-ell- The keep a bit of texture, but the have that nice oatmealy coheasiveness. It's hard to describe but are definatly worth trying! |

And the nifty tin that McCann's Steel Cut Oats come in is cool looking and useful, too. For everything from flowers to art paintbrush to pencil storage.

The can that McCann's comes in is $6 at our co-op, but they also sell the boxed refill version for around $3. I buy the boxed and then put in some ceramic cannisters that have a sealing gasket.
I love to put some brown sugar and either cream or milk in with the oatmeal....mmm! |

I love steel cut oats! I put them in cold (raw) milk and then bring them to a simmer and cook them while I'm out running around with my chickens! It's a nice treat when I come in with red nose & fingers!!!

Brown sugar sounds good, but I'm also fond of putting some Tupelo honey(my favaorite) in with my oats.

I love steel-cut oats, too - they are so yummy. I only discovered them last year, and I sure wish I'd known they existed earlier!!! I've never cooked them in milk, always water - but tomorrow morning, it's milk for sure!
We are such an oatmeal family - my little boy thinks it's great fun, and a pretty good treat, when he can go "fishing" for raisins in his oatmeal. Now how's that for being entertained by your breakfast cereal? I so strongly believe that kids don't need bright colors, weird characters and so much sugar they'll bounce off the walls in their food (but now, I'll step off my soapbox... ).

Sorry I must have missed your post. Which topic was it under?
I am doing okay- still pretty sick with the pregnancy. I am going crazy having to stay at home all the time, but until my nausea gets under control it is hard for me to get a job. I have a lot of projects here at home that could use some attention- mostly sewing my make shift curtains. Unfortunatly I do not have a sewing machine. I am contemplating hand sewing them anyway! |

I never could stand the consistancy of cooked rolled oats so I grew up eating raw rolled oats with milk and sugar, which I still enjoy. Recently I have become concerned with eating raw things because of bacteria, etc. so I decided to try Bob's Red Mill steel cut oats - they are great! and you don't need any milk or sugar. I cook them slightly then fry them in a little bit of healthy oil (canola or olive), then add salt and pepper or Mrs Dash original salt free seasoning. Also good with a little chicken or turkey breast, broccoli, sunflower seeds, and so on. I imagine you could add just about anything you might add to rice. They don't taste like rolled oats. All the benefits of oats without milk and sugar!

| Hi, I have been using the Irish oats and really like them. I put them in the pan the night before with the water and let them soak. Then in the morning I only need to cook them for about 10 minutes. They do a good job of filling me up to start the day. |

I love both kinds of oats..we tend to use rolled oats more often, but I am due to get some more steel cut soon..I love them best. We always have ours with raisins, brown sugar or local honey and a little butter and cream...yum!! My kids love all hot cereal and I try to cook a hot breakfast for them most mornings. This time of year it is so cold when they get up that I feel too guilty to just shove some cold cereal on the table. They would be horrified!
Their favorite hot cereal is Zoom..but they love any I put in front of them.
My dad ate oatmeal every single day for breakfast and was so excited when he last came out here to visit (2 weeks before he died) and we were having oatmeal for breakfast. I was all ready to apologize since he has that every day..but he was glad. He said he likes it at home better than the cafe he always ate breakfast at. My mom NEVER cooked oatmeal for him!! He just got in the habit of getting up early and going to the cafe for breakfast with his old friends and had oatmeal every day. My second son is dating his favorite little waitress now. Gosh I miss him so much sometimes. I always always think of him when I make oatmeal.

Yep...with my grandpa (we called him Pappy) it was Rocky Road candy bars. We hated them...my brother and sister and I...and he didn't realize that. He used to buy us each one whenever we went somewhere with him and we would eat them and say thank you and act so thrilled to get them..ugh!! But now it makes me smile to think of how thoughtful he was. by the way...I LOVE Big Red gum.

I bought some of the Scottish Oatmeal some time back and it has just been waiting on the shelf. After reading the posts we made up a batch for breakfast yesterday. WOW, it is delicious! I looked up steal cut oats in my Whole Grain Cookbook. Says that they are whole oats that have been cut into smaller pieces. Also they point out that they have not been steamed or cooked.
Has anyone tried making their own? If I try running whole oats through my grain grinder would that produce a similar product? any ideas?

Just this morning I ate a bowl of 5 grain cereal I make; steel cut oats, regular oats, wheat bran, barley and flax... I mixed in some molasses, banana, dried mango and buttermilk...deeeeelicious!! It is just the comfort food this pregnant mama needed to jump start the day!

I adore steel cut oats...my second favorite would be Pompanoosuc Porridge (sorry about the spelling!) by King Arthur Baking Company in Vermont. It is a mixture of whole oats and grains, very chewy, very good!!
