My dad refuses to sign up for direct deposit of his social security check. Anyone else have this problem? If he doesn't sign up, will he still be able to get it? Cindy

SS does not like to, but they will do it.
Personally I can see why he wouldn't want to. I can name many times with direct deposit has bit my family in the rear! ARG!

Cindy, I suggest you contact someone locally in the Social Security office and discuss it with them. My hubby and I both draw SS and it is direct deposit. Sometime last year we got something in the mail that said that we all HAD to sign up for direct deposit but I don't really know what they say about alternatives. We have DD and like it . . . our SS has never missed a beat. However I do understand why someone would not want to do it. Hope you get it figured out! CJ

CJ--my mom has direct deposit. she said you have to sign up by March for direct deposit. Cause it's costing the government too much to mail them. which makes sense. I just wonder if they'll deduct it from your check if they have to mail it? My dad is not very reasonable these days. He's convinced the doctors are getting paid huge sums to prescribe the meds. he takes. He thinks he doesn't need them, but he can't tell that he's not as mentally sharp as he used to be. Then he says the meds. are making him gain weight, but he's into the ice cream 3 or 4 times a day--can't remember when he ate or what he ate. I'm glad my mom is still able to take care of him. Cindy

The office manager at the nursing home I work at said they have to be direct deposited, I would think you could look on the SS web site and find some answers for your questions. We just got direct deposit at work and I was surprised how many people didn't have checking or savings accounts, so they get money. Roxanna |

direct deposit only, most banks will forgo monthly charges when you have direct deposit, plus your check is always there, and if the 3rd falls on a sunday or holiday, you get it a day earlier

i agree about speaking with someone from SS or going online- i worked as a bank teller before moving back to ohio and we were told that everyone was mandated to have direct deposit also-- i would think there is a way to convince him -good luck!

Kristi, It sounds like the problem is with your husband's employer and how they manage it. For at least the last 14 years my paychecks have always been direct deposit and that was from THREE totally different employers. Those deposits NEVER missed being in my account when they were supposed to be. And, our Soc. Sec. benefits are always in the account when they are supposed to be.
Personally, I like it because I don't have to worry about it getting lost in the mail AND running to town to get it deposited in the bank.
Cindy, I hope you get it sorted out as I'm sure it's very frustrating. Does your dad have any guy friends who get Soc. Sec. and by direct deposit he can talk to that, perhaps, can reassure him? CJ
