Yes, a bear! We know there are bears in the neighborhood which abounds with fruit orchards and our neighbors have seen them, my hubbyand I have been scat and tracks . . . LOTS of sign! One neighbor just yards to the west of us had a relatvively close encounter with a big one just the other day.
My hubby went into the orchard right here by the house last evening to get apples and saw 2 piles of scat along the fence that runs in front of our house.
At 4:30 AM, our dog Bramble, who sleeps in the house started barking LOUD and SHARP . . WOW! Woke us up smartly! She was on the couch with her front paws up on the back of the couch which is below a big picture window that faces the orchard. AND, there was still enough moonlight (and very clear skies) to see a bear right there in the orchard, directly in front of our house, about 25 feet away, just on the other side of the fence. Needless to say we didn't get back to sleep . . .
. . . had to get up early anyway to go set up our booth at Farmers Market. It's that time of year and there is an abundance of apples and pears on the ground for them to feed on getting ready for winter.
It'll probably wander back through there again more than once before they go hibernate. CJ

I am glad that Bramble was in the house. It had to be scary seeing that so close to your house. Please be careful. |

CJ, do you do your power walks this time of year? Up here they put radio collars on a few bears to track them, and then put a pic in the paper with a different color dot for each bear to show where the bears go. Holy cow they are everywhere, IN TOWN! Up and down neighborhood streets,it's very scary ! Take care Debbie |

Alee and CJ and Debbie... You're making the complaints about stinkbug infestations in our area seem ridiculous! I think I'd pass out if I knew there was a bear or a cougar or a puma or ANYTHING like that prowling around in my yard or neighborhood! I freak out over field mice and bats! God bless and protect you! Hugs - Nini

CJ, wow!! Will bears try to get into the house? And is it possible? Are you allowed to shoot them if they do make that attempt? That is pretty scary. I think I'll just keep my coyotes and snakes and not complain!!! Stay safe!

Yes, girls, it is scary and awesome all at the same time. They are God's creatures and are beautiful. But while they really like the fruit they are also carnivores. And, they have been known to break into houses in some areas, but not around here. There is an abundance of feed for them and as long as that is available they'll not be looking elsewhere. Yes, we could shoot them if necessary and then call DOW officials so they know. The same applies to the mountain lions. Debbie, I do my power walks year round in almost every kind of weather. If I didn't I'd go absolutely bonkers. I do walk in areas where they are not likely to be wandering around with activity that bears (and mountain lions) typically don't like and will avoid. CJ

Well, that would be scary having a bear break into your house!!!! At least I don't have to worry about the alligators breaking into my house, unless someone would leave the door opened. OMGoodness, CJ, be careful on those power walks. Keep us posted. When do the bears begin to hibernate? Marly

Marlee, We have not seen bears while on our glamping adventures, but we have . . so far . . been in campgrounds where there are lots of people. While it is not always the case, bears typically don't like to be around a lot of people and will shy away. If they are hungry and there is food available or people start feeding them or being careless about food storage while camping, then that a different story entirely.
We HAVE seen bears in our mountains, but we have been four-wheeling in the back country and the bears are usually out harvesting whatever berries there are. We DO know to be watchful and alert. And, yes, we do carry firearms . . . even when my daughter and I go glamping. We also know how to take care of them and use them. CJ

Yikes! How scary. We have bears in our neighborhood too. I luckily haven't seen one, though I am sure they have crossed my yard. I think I would die of fright before it could snack on me, LOL. I took a bear class at my library a few years back. It was interesting and informative and did say how rare bear attacks on humans are really. Still, I am not one who is too keen on coming up on something higher than me on the food chain. Be careful. But they are beautiful!
Here in CT they did recently have to euthanize a bear, sadly. It got too used to humans and for awhile its antics were "cute"... sleeping in hammocks, swimming in pools, etc, but they killed it when twice it charged humans.
What breed of bear do you have? We have black bears.
