Our family has the first one of the season and it stinks.

I have such a horrible sinus headache that I'm taking tylenol and at night I take benadryl because it also helps me sleep (I have terrible insomnia too)

What works????

We stay far far away from meds if at all possible. The only med that is used daily here is my albuterol for my asthma.

For colds I stand firmly by HOME MADE chicken noodle soup, orange tea with a dash of tang, and water water water water water and OJ OJ OJ OJ OJ (I am addicted to OJ as it is.)

No one here ever keeps a cold for more than a day or two doing all of that.

For sinuses (I have terrible sinuses thanks to a terrible sinus infection as a two year old) I take allium sepa (you can find it at a health food store or a natural foods coop and my husband rubs the back of my nack for me (where a lot of your sinus glands are) as well as facial massage. He is really good at it and he ALWAYS clears me up and I can sleep. I do keep a hanky at hand though.

I feel your pain sister! I have had terrible sinuses all my life (was hit in the nose by a baseball bat. an accident!) anyway..... a nice hot bath with Epsom salts is s great cure all. Hot water with grated ginger root in it is very soothing. Drink lots of water and yes!!! homemade chicken soup for sure!!

I physically craved chicken soup SOOOO badly last night. I should give into it.

Of course, it only works when someone ELSE makes it for you!!

I'm thinking I'm going to bag mommy chores for tonight and ask if DH will do them. I want to change into my flannels and cuddle with the kids on the floor for the evening.

When I feel a cold coming on, I make a quick chicken soup with lots of onion, garlic, fresh ginger and jalapeno peppers - even if I start with a frozen piece of chicken breast (or whatever) I just put it on to simmer with a bay leaf while I cut up the rest of it...first saute the onion in some olive oil, add the garlic and jalapeno then the ginger...maybe cook some rice and then toss it all together, sit at the table with a lot of kleenex or hankies nearby and enjoy! I usually add a few other vegetables too - I keep an assortment of frozen veges on hand, as being by myself, sometimes fresh just turn on me before I can eat them. Then I have a shot of whisky and go directly to bed (this was my mother's suggestion *g*). There is also a mixture of lavender, tangerine and clove essential oils that is a great germ killer. When I'm around sick people or on a plane, I put a few drops on a cotton ball and tuck it in my bra so my body warmth keeps the oils activated and I surround myself with that. I am starting to think Airborne is a good preventative too. And, lastly, a friend of mine always said her mother said to eat prunes if you felt a cold coming on so that you would clean your system out and get rid of all of those germs... Oh, and I take more than my usual 1000 mg of vitamin C also. I can't drink a lot of OJ as it bothers my tummy. So good luck, and feel better soon! Judy

I have been trying Grapefruit Seed Extract which is supposed to help get rid of viruses, colds, sore throats, etc. I have been on it for 2 days now and this resp. infection/sinus cold is at bay. I cannot believe it is working.
And yes, REST, REST, REST and water water water. Also, I try to eliminate heavy foods from my diet. No dairy, little grains except brown rice and I eat lots of broth soups. I don't eat chicken so my veg. equivelent is wonderful for me.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery. It is no fun to try to function with a cold!!

When I feel a cold or sore throat coming on I drink a mug of tea (regular or herbal) with 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar and 2 teaspoons of honey mixed in. It seems to help me - don't know exactly why. I got the idea out of a book somewhere. I actually like the taste of it, but some might not. Just a thought!
Another thing - the last time I had a really bad cold, my mother kept serving me toast with chopped fresh tomatoes and chopped raw garlic on top. It tasted very good (I happen to love garlic), and I don't doubt that it helped.

I have an immune system that is in the trash can! I had a series of abcessed teeth, then a bacterial endocarditis that damaged my heart valves, on top of that I have rheumatoid arthritis, which is an auto-immune disease..for that I have been on so much predinisone I am lucky I don't have a full beard!!!

I don't use pharmacuetical meds unless it is an *extreme* situation...
When I feel a cold or flu coming on I start talking raw garlic immediately. It is easy, super inexpensive, and good for your whole body.
here's how I do it:
1. Peel and crush a clove of garlic in my garlic press
2. put it in a big spoon, mix it with a little bit of water.
3. fix myself a cup of OJ..so I can wash the garlic down fast.

I take this 4-6 times a day and I can usually keep a cold from taking over my life....BUT, if I don't keep on top of it, a cold will automatically go to my lungs! Then I double or triple the garlic!

Remember to rest, drink your OJ, and of course the homemade chicken soup!

You will smell garlicky, but hey, the vampires will leave you alone (your dh might too, so you can sleep!)

Good luck
Kate

My family does not use allopathic medicine, so here is what we do. If it has alread progressed to a cough (sometimes they sneak up on me) I go with a weeks worth of colloidal silver, lots of water, and rest -the symptoms are usualy significantly less with in 24 hours. If it is just coming on I go with Origanoil twice a day, Echinacea tea, lots of water, and rest. If it is simply cold season, I drink a cup of garlic tea every morning and give it to everyone in my family who can get it down, the little ones have a hard time with it (talking of that...I need to start again for the winter). To ease symptoms short term I use Whitewillow and Feverfew for aches, pains, and fever along with a valerin tincture for grumpies and stress (Tri-light herbs has good tinctures of both).

As for the garlicy smell...if you have that it is a sign of toxicity. Take more garlic. When you quit smelling your body has been flushed of what ever nasties you've been carring around. Kate, your mention of predinisone concerned me...go to your local pharmacy and ask to see a copy of the PDR (physicians desk refrence) to look it up. That way you will be better informed next time you talk to your dr.
