I'm pretty excited. A friend and I went the the county fair yesterday and found out they were demonstrating spinning tonight. We talked to the gal in charge of things and found out they were offering a free drop spindle and wool for the first 5 people who signed up for the class. We were the first 2 so we should get the spindle. Woo hoo!

I've been wanting to learn this for quite awhile after reading some threads from ladies here who spin. Wish me luck at this new craft!

Good luck! Once you feel that wool in your hands, it will be all over! Next will be a wheel, then washing, picking and carding your very own raw fleece to spin.Have fun!

The class was great! I'm not sure I have a natural affinity for spinning but I did love the feel of the wool. They taught us first with drop spindles that one of the members of the fair board made with wool from the instructors animals. At first they had us use two different colors of acrylic yarn just to get the feel of the spinning process and what it looks like when you spin fast and slow. Then we moved on to the actual wool. I was having a hard time getting the wool to seperate so I could make a thinner product, it all came out really fat and lumpy. Then I would get it too thin and it would break. Then after a while she had us use her spinning wheel and some more acrylic yarn. So I think I will keep practicing and seeing if I can figure it out. They of course made it look effortless and easy!

Have a fun time - like everything it takes time but well worth the practicing. If you do a bit of predrafting before you spin that way you are not having to work so hard while the spindle is going. Also different fibers drafter easier so try as many as you can have access to and soon you will be amazed how great you have become. Keep that first yarn so you can see how far you have come.
