We were just out to put Jasper (our new horse) in his stall for the night and he was smelling me (like, obnoxiusly) all over the top half of my body and then was licking my arms - I don't know what his deal was. Then he showed his teeth. I don't think it was an aggressive thing, someone else told me they "show their teeth" when they want to smell something better. Jasper went right in his stall, no issues or anything. Any ideas what all that was??

Amy What can I say.. You smell good to animals. That is not a bad thing. Unless the animal is a vulture |

Great wiki article. I never knew this actually had a name. My cat does it all the time. We've always called it the stinky face. She will smell the floor or a blanket or something and then look up with her mouth half open. I always thought its because she smelled something that was stinky to her LOL. My other cat that I grew up with did it too.

The drawing back of the lips was probably cause he got a whiff of pheromones, maybe some perfume or something or just natural. The licking may be because he is craving salt. Laura

Be careful he doesn't get too interested and bite your breast. Laura

HA! One of my horses has a thing about doing this. Then he wants to lick my upper arm till I finally say that's enough. My new horse must be getting lessons from Mr. Leo, because now he seems to want to know what is the big attraction! At least, he's loosening up and starting to relax and be a horse. Lurve them both!!

Bulls will do this as will a lot of other animals.
Those of us in the zoo field often times come home and get the "once over" from our own animals too. It's especially funny to see a cat's reaction to whatever it is on our work boots.
This flhemin response many times it is to "test" the readiness of a female species for breeding.
Often times they will test a steam of urine as a female is peeing. It's pretty gross, but that's what they do, so ungelded horses probably do the same thing.
It would be unnerving for a horse to be doing that- especially so close to my chest, and I wouldn't encourage much of it. But I'm not a horse person.
And if your horse has been "fixed" he might have just caught a whiff of something interesting.
